Ranger: Read our minds, not our signs
So you can’t park at Maho Bay? Or, you can, but only in the legal spots and not where there is no parking. But you wouldn’t know that because there ARE NO SIGNS. (And as you can see, there’s not a whole lot of parking anyway.) There is a Source story this week about people getting parking tickets over the weekend at Maho Bay because they were parked illegally. In response to protests, here’s what the Source quotes chief ranger Mark Marschall as saying: “We’re trying to avoid having signs.” Well that’s helpful! If you want to read it, double park your browser here.
VIDEO ALERT! A rock-a-fella loved. LS Rockefeller’s love affair with St. John, and why he was only part of the story of the National Park. An interview with Steve Simonsen about the Park’s smokin’ new DVD commemorating its 50th anniversary, tomorrow on On-StJohn! (And how you can get the DVD.)

This whole parking debacle makes about as much sense as ending A Christmas Carol with “and you see, gentle readers, Scrooge was redeemed because, all along, he was a giant talking squirrel.”

This is so typical of the way things happen down there, and is one of the reasons I find myself laughing when I’m there. The “regular” order of things just doesn’t exist in any way that’s familiar to folks like me from the U.S. While I sympathize with the frustration of getting a ticket at Maho, does anyone really believe that there is the slightest chance of the Rangers ever being organized enough to actually execute a sustained enforcement campaign?

Where are the legal spots? Don’t you basically go down the road a little bit from the picture and drive into a tree on the side of the road? When the tree stops you, you’re parked.
At least that’s what we did. Then, you run like hell to get away from the absolutely evil bugs.
Saw a flock(?) of squids when snorkeling there. Not very colorful, but cool in its own way

It’s part of the character and fun of St. John. Don’t make them put up more signs.

Funny thing happened when we went to Maho for the first time. We were on our way back from Coral Bay and we were coming back on the Northshore rd. when we came up such a beautiful beach we HAD to stop. And stop we did when we backed in to our spot and a tree hit us in our rear bumper!

Just curious..how much is the parking ticket? If it isn’t too expensive consider it a fee for parking. It certainly would be worth it to hang out on this special little beach!
