Keep left, mon!

Not funny. But kinda is, since nobody got hurt. The local paper reports two jeeps (both yellow by the way) collided head-on last week on the road that runs from the barge dock to Marketplace. The Tradewinds says one of the drivers was on the wrong side of the road. We are more worried about all the trucks than forgetful vacationers. The trucks have always been a scary problem, but it just kind of seems they’re driving faster and crazier than ever. Please remember to stay on the left. And if you hear a big truck gearing down around the corner or over the hill, stay way, way left. Some of these truck drivers think the line in the road is meant to be straddled.

Hey, That looks like one of the yellow jeeps we rented, I sure am glad I remember to keep left even after the one too many painkillers :)

And if you are going up or down the switchbacks near cinnamon and maho, or the nasty one out of town towards chocolate hole, pull over and stop off the road. They can’t make the turn if they don’t take up the whole road, and there is no way they can stop either, so be very very careful. And, if there is a truck ahead of you going up a steep hill, wait at the bottom off the road a bit in case they lose their brakes or power, and come back down the hill - that’s happened a few times. Could we hear from one of the drivers on their perspective? I used to think I had pretty much seen it all as far as driving goes. St. John has changed that perspective.

To expact on sud’s email above, check out the article in the Tradewinds on 1/15 about the fully loaded concrete truck that flipped over above Princess Bay……

You know, it’s really not funny until you see the two Jeeps, nose to nose. Then you just have to chuckle because you can see it happening.

Perhaps if those jeeps were painted a brighter color, they would have seen each other!

We were there in August 2006 and it was a white knuckle ride for me the whole time. I was more concerned about the trucks and their drivers than the other tourists who really seemed more concerned about the road safety…. Keep Left MON!
