BBQ Smackdown: Candi’s Delights
We’ve never been huge fans of Uncle Joe’s. It’s okay, and we’ll eat it. But we always read with amazement the glowing forum reviews of Joe‘s. It’s like The Emperor’s New Clothes or something. I think just the smell of a grill excites us all. That’s just our opinion and we know lots of folks LOVE Joe’s. Anyway…now there’s some competition. Candi’s Delights is a new stand on the road just outside of downtown Cruz Bay on the way to Starfish. (Sniff out the window as you head down the hill just before the 3-way intersection.) It’s still not Memphis or Kansas City or Texas and there’s no slow smokin’ going on, but…our opinion?…damn good! The sauce is really great. The guy in the kitchen is a defector. Candi also makes a whole bunch of home-made desserts. (I did not get a free dessert. Anderson Cooper probably would’ve, but whatever.) Side note: Candi’s husband, Elvis, runs one of the two companies that control the vast propane tank refill empire on St. John. Meet Candi and have a little BBQ here!

whoa….! anyone notice the very professional looking , “reporter-on-the-street” wireless handheld microphone emblazoned with the OSJ logo? Anderson Cooper better watch out.

This place sounds great! We’ve never been fans of Uncle Joe’s (Open Pit) so we are definitely going to check out Candi’s. If she can get you your food in less than an hour, she’ll have another advantage over Joe’s.

Being smack in the middle of the Texas Rodeo BBQ cookoff country we are surrounded by awful dried out overcooked worthless cuts of meat (brisket=yuck)…Without saying something would get my lynched by my neighbors lets just say Texas BBQ leaves a lot to be desired…only my opinion of course…
I can’t wait to try Candi’s BBQ though I believe they will be seeing us early for our fist night on St. John…those ribs looked awesome!

Anderson better work on getting the whole “hat turned around backwards” thing going. Trends are being set here!

Just offering a shout out from Memphis since you mentioned two of our religions - Bar-B-Que and Elvis - in the same update!
We’ll be down in late March - so I’ll have to go taste testing!

Yum!
Looks like I won’t have just the rum to blame for the weight I gain.

Nothing could be better than Uncle Joe’s.

Is Uncle Joe’s the place on the corner there in Cruz bay across from the “2 El Presidentes for $3″ bar? If so, it was quite good when we ate there in August. But, I’d be willing to try Candi’s to see how it compares

Uncle Joe’s is at best mediocre BBQ. Great if you like parboiled with a finish on a grill. I think it only tastes great because you’re eating on St John
Will definitely be trying this new location.

We’ll sample it for sure. I haven’t understood the whole Joe’s hype myself. We live 1 hour from Memphis and My faves are dry ribs at Rendezvous and pulled pork at Interstate BBQ. They got to know their slaw also- not just any old thing will do! If you’ve had a few in the afternoon and walk by Joes the smell alone drags you inside, even if it is not my favorite.
