Beach Break: Trunk Bay, Part Two
You’re in for a treat with today’s Beach Break. Several times a year the North Shore swell gets so big that North Shore beaches are swamped with big waves. The last week has been one of those times. Trunk Bay seems to be particularly susceptible. The far east side of Trunk gets surf from two directions. Quite impressive. It gets so bad that the Trunk Bay snorkel trail is closed and life guards warn everybody they can to be careful. Not everybody listens. (Oh…and welcome Beach Break’s first sponsor! This will give new life to my dinghy story. I know, I know, they are all somewhat dinghy but anyway- we were trying to park our dinghy in waves such as that in November. Won’t be back on one this trip. It was sooooo rough, I was getting sick hanging over the side. I’m sure it had nothing to do with all of the wine consumed after the wonton horror the previous evening. We got caught out in a scary storm.

I look at that and know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I’d be saying to myself “It’s not that bad…you can go out on the trail”. And then I’d be strapped to the roof of the jeep, bloodied and battered for a trip back to the villa. I like to forget that I’m no longer 18.

Wow, we’ve never seen surf like that on St. John. What a difference from the summmer! It reminds me of the waves in Bermuda.

That’s a normal day here in California, but I don’t think I’d want to be out snorkeling in it! I do have to say that’s an interesting rip tide on the Cay side of the bay!
