Beach Break: Salt Pond

Today’s Beach Break is Salt Pond Beach. Drive past Shipwreck landing, and keep driving. Up and down a few hills, and you’ll see the hilltop parking lot on your left. There’s a short hike down the hill (which seems like a much longer hike going back up). Aside from a sometimes skanky outhouse, there are no amenities here. Also, stuff does occasionally disappear from vehicles here, so lock up and don’t leave anything valuable. But Salt Pond is definitely a top ten St. John beach.

OK, so I’ve been here at work five minutes and I already have two of my secretaries cackling about how they were on the set of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, being filmed this week in our neck of the woods (airing May 20th, in case anyone likes to watch the show). I can’t even hear myself think. So what did I do? Closed my door, went to on-stjohn.com, and spent five minutes in paradise on Salt Pond Beach. Thanks guys - you’ve once again made my day!

The trip to Salt Pond isn’t complete until you’ve made the walk along the path over to Drunk Bay to see the coral people!

Not a bad way to start the day at all.

That is one of the BEST Beach Breaks yet!!!

It look like a great place to pick a spot, lie down your towle, unpack your beach bag and just settle-in for a while. You could almost smell the salt in the air and fell the gentle brezee on your face, with the sun warming you soul. I am thinking of plans to get there very soon! (Sell everything I own & move to St.John for a year or two.) That way to see them all!!

It’s a great place to spend the day, but watch out for the sand burrs. I always manage to carry a few home with me. I’d choose sand burrs over not being there, any day. It’s pretty arid there too, so don’t forget to take plenty of water with you. When you get back to the parking area look for Henry or Jen. They always have refreshing things to eat and drink for sale out of the back of their car. Plus they’re great people to get to know…

For anyone looking to find sea turtles Salt Pond has been lucky for me. I’ve snorkeled there twice and swam with the Turtles both times. Thanks for the temporary escape.

Loved Salt Pond. Spent most of two days there in Sept 05. I was the only one there one of those days and the other day just me and a lovely sunbather. So peaceful. Thanks for the refreshing of my memories. Hope to be back this fall.
