Can you relate?

This was one of the BEST subject lines on the usvi-on-line forum in a long time! Somebody that excited about their trip plans. The eternal question: What is it about St. John???? We also loved this thread (titled: Most overrated/Most underrated) on Anthony’s site. One of the best threads in a long time. It was great to see people being honest. It wasn’t that long ago that if you posted anything NEGATIVE about ANYTHING on that board, you got flamed. Maybe that thread will encourage more lurkers to come out of the woodwork. The more contributors, the better on that site. On the outside chance you don’t have it bookmarked, it’s here. Another favorite is the VI Now forum, here.

TRUE, I once made a general, negative comment about the “street people” asking for hand outs in the park. OMG what a mistake that was! … I admit maybe I was not politically correct in the term “street people.” I should have used a softer word, maybe “mentally challenged?” - A reply had many (!) in the subject head. Right away you know your statement is being trashed. The person said, they live there and there are no street people in St. John! I had to say to myself maybe they are never in the park or they would know them all by name? And tourist were in complete agreement with the person “who lives there.” After this encounter, I decided to stay away from message boards and let everyone live their lives in paradise la la land.

There was recently an article in the Tradewinds, I think, by Iris Kern. She did a study and found something insane like 38 homeless people in Cruz Bay! That is a large number for that small population. It might’ve been on stj.onepaper.com The St. John Source- a good place to look for local news.

The only problem with most overrated/underrated is that now everyone knows that the Tuna Down Under at the Beach Bar is fablulous. When I arrive in June there will be lines and it will be gone. :-( PS I sometimes post to the forum.

I have to say that the USVI-online forum is one of the best online communities that I visit. I am a message board junkie (dork) and I love the sense of community and family that I get fron that board.

I have been a member there for over 5 years.

    Helen,

I think the word was out on the “Tuna Down Now” before the O/U post. When we were on island last year, it frequently was sold out by the time we stumbled in. We need to get there earlier and do our stumbling on the way out.

    Pete:

You are corrct, thanks. The guys doing work on the deck are Decks Down Under so I confused myself. Easy to do I’m afraid. I am now dreaming of sitting at the bar, watching the sunset and eating a meal of delicious Tuna Down Now.

That forum is more like private chat now. It’s just a bunch of friends talking to each other, making plans, setting up get togethers in Wisconsin, etc. It’s nothing like it was five years ago. Too bad, too.

The “lurkers” have no incentive to join in.
