Butts out in Charlotte
Charlotte Douglas Int’l Airport, one of the few remaining “smoke ‘em if you got ‘em” airports, is now officially smoke free as of earlier this month. Your reaction to this news depends of course on basically one fact. You smoke or you don’t. One thing is clear. Places like the good old Stock Car Café are a lot less busy. Except for the stream of jittery smokers coming in and going out after discovering they’ll have to wait a few more hours for a smoke. So if you smoke, slap on a couple of extra patches before you head toward the airport.

I’m not a smoker, but something along these lines struck me the other day. At RDU, one of the terminals has a glass-enclosed Shame room where people can smoke. I’ve seen those in Atlanta also. But, as I sat in the non-smoking Logan Airport for 5 hours the other day it hit me that when the weather’s bad, the smokers must really suffer.
Is it wrong to say I giggled to myself about that?

The Miami airport has one of those smoker’s “terrariums” too. Such fun to watch them in their natural habitat.

I hope that all you self centered non-smokers realize that smokers pay HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS PER YEAR in tobacco taxes in addition to and in excess of paying the normal taxes that all you non smokers pay. Smokers pay dearly for the right to use tobacco. If tobacco is so evil and unhealthy, then our government should simply make it illegal. They won’t though, because if they did, all you self rightious tobacco Nazis would have to pay a lot more taxes to make up the difference, and that would be politically unpopular. Do we live in the “Land of the Free”? Or do we live in the home of the squeaky wheel? I know that tobacco is unhealthy. So is alcohol, fatty foods, unprotected sex, and breathing the air that is poluted by cars, trucks, boats, airplanes, factoies, etc. This is the world we live in.

Unprotected sex is bad for you? Now you tell me – “cough, cough,” think I’ll have another drink, “cough,” and lite up another one of those oh so cheap St. John cigarettes!

I’m not a smoker, but I think people should be allowed to smoke in designated areas, especially bars. Although, I am amazed that they finally shut it down in Charlotte, it will be nice to be able to see my chicken sandwich next time.
