Beach Break: Haulover Bay
Today’s Beach Break is a little off the beaten path. Although there’s a well-beaten path to get to it. Haulover Bay is past Hurricane Hole on the road that takes you to the East End. In fact, look for the sign that says East End, and you’re there. It is the skinniest part of the island, with bays on both sides of the road. Haulover is on the North side of the road, an easy, flat 5 minute walk through the woods. There’s a beach on the South side of the road too. We’ll get to that one later. Check out Haulover Bay, where there’s great snorkeling and few, if any, people, below.

The story of how Haulover got it’s name was shared with me during my visit. Not sure if it’s true (like all pirate and shipping stories, I guess) but it’s pretty interesting, nonetheless.
Thanks for a good break!

This is definitely one of our favorite places to go on St. John, Although not a beach with sand, it offers great views and great snorkeling.
The story I heard is that those out on boats would “Haul it over” to the south shore of St. John rather than sail around the East End making their journey shorter.

I heard the same thing but with the fact that the small boats would do it to get away from the pirates

Yeah, what they said.
