On-StJohn Road Trip: Annaberg Ruins

This is one of the most beautiful spots on St. John, although we doubt the slaves working here had much time to enjoy it. The views from here are amazing. This tiny plot of land is steeped in history (and there are plenty of plaques to tell you all about its steepy-ness.) Follow the signs from the North Shore Road and park in the lot. It is an easy, easy, five minute walk. Plan on spending some time here, depending on how contemplative you get. No history in today’s installment. No interviews. Just a few minutes of some very beautiful images. Annaberg Ruins, below.

One of my favorite spots… This is what I would show someone who might ask “Why do you keep going to St. John?”. Thanks for the beautiful piece…

Guys, VERY nicely done. We’ll be on the island in 4 days and we will definitely check it out in person. Thanks for the great “tip”.

Nice work! If you ever make a 3-hour version let me know, I’ll buy the DVD. For relief on a blazing hot day this is the place to be– really great breezes. And not a bad view either…

Speaking of history, everyone who loves St John should read Ruth Hull Low & Rafael Valls’s “St. John Backtime, Eyewitness Accounts from 1718 to 1956″ (St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, Eden Hill Press, 1985). It really helps to understand the island and the culture and the people who live there.
