Beach Break: near broke

Hey Beach Break fans. A little help here. On-StJohn.com has given you 27 Beach Breaks taking you to a total of 25 beaches since the series began. We have a couple beaches left, but a little input would be appreciated, because unless global warming picks up the pace, there aren’t that many beaches left on St. John to visit (and Dear Mr. Gore: those polar ice caps are covering up some prime real estate.)

We’ll get you off St. John and to some nearby beaches in the next few weeks, but if we’re missing some St. John favorites, chime in. Without more Beach Breaks, our open tab at the Tap Room is going to expire!

hmm, before I head off to my trip today I was thinking I hadn’t seen a beach break for Peter Bay. You can access the beach by boat you know.

What you need now is an under water camera and you could give us reef breaks

Striving to avoid starting the workday too abrubtly, I just went back through your video section and wrote down the beaches I found that have been covered so far in the Beach Breaks. I think a couple of older BBs are missing but, of the beaches I’ve visited that I didn’t find are: Little Maho, Great & Little Lameshur, Honeymoon, and most of the Caneel Beaches which I suggest you approach by water in the dead of night with an infrared lens. Just like the Haitians coming ashore.

    Jeff,
When you run out of beaches, instead of boat cams, do underwater snorkeling cam shots of different reefs. Love to see that. One of the reasons we love St. John is the snorkeling

I second Dennis! Browns or Fish Bay? Reef cam would be a really cool idea too!

    Jeff,
The beach variety is really nice but the “break” is the important part. Spacing out in daydreams for a few minutes is a joy!! Heck, I sometimes use the Cruz Bay dock’s webcam for my “break” (dreaming the next time it’s me getting off that ferry).
You can always reshoot the beaches from different spots. How about time-lapse of clouds, sunsets, or sunrises over the beaches or bays? You guyes are really creative so I’m sure whatever you come up with will still draw the daydreaming crowd. BTW – our group will be on SJ this Saturday!! Enough dreaming…time to go pack.

you guys are great, i love your website, i visit it just about everday. i’ve been to stjohn 4 times and can’t wait to go back.
just a few ideas, you can show vidios for

all the level roads on the island
    the sunsets/sunrises
    the hiking trails
    the resorts
    the restaurants
and maybe some off the beaten path places
    that the islanders go to
so, take care and enjoy the island

Can you do St. Thomas Beaches and maybe one or two on St. Croix?

I suggest “Island Breaks”. Maybe drag a camera along:
    1. on the Reef Bay Hike,
    2. while having a few beers at “insert bar name here”,
    3. spying on the geep (goat-sheep) moving through the pasture next to Love City Mini-mart,
    4. feeding some donkeys,
    5. while driving through Cruz Bay,
    6. walking thru Charlotte Amalie on a cruise ship day, hahaha

I looooove the beaches but certain island spots hold a lot of memories for me as well.

I also loved the suggestion of another poster who mentioned underwater tours of snorkel spots.

Have you gone to Vie’s yet? She wasn’t there when we went, so it would be nice to see it up close.

I really like the beach breaks your doing. I would like to see some like you suggested from some of the nearby BVI’s. Maybe some out of the way places. Every taxi drive on St. Thomas can take you to the beaches there. How about something a little different off the beaten path as they would say.

Thanks and keep them coming. Next time on island if you tab runs out we will buy you a drink.

How about beer breaks? It would be nice to see you/someone enjoying a cold one at your favorite St. John watering holes. “Beer Break” has a really nice ring to it.

    Hi Jeff,

I ditto the posters re: Denis Bay beach. I’ve seen pictures of it, lots of residents say it’s their favorite, yet after 17 years, I’ve never been! I don’t even know how to get there. So HELP! :-)

    Thank you!!

How about dumpster breaks? I like the one at the junction of 104 and Centerline. The one up the hill from the Westin is just okay, if you ask me. But, my all time favorite is the one across the street from the EC gas station…that baby rocks!

No? Okay, well, how about snipets of drives we all like…up Jacob’s ladder, the South Shore road above Rendezvous (did I spell that right?) Bay, the switch-backs on the North Shore road just past Cinnamon…you get the idea. And, if you wanted to get really creative, you could put Vaseline on the lens so that we all could relate to the feeling of driving back to the villa after Bushwackers at the Beach Bar. Yup, those are my ideas.

    Pete

I like the suggestions previously mentioned, of course. But you know, it’s not like a repeat would be the worst thing in the world.

Maybe a different angle… like Boat Cam, but maybe… Palm Cam!? :)

Since my husband is a runner and frequently chased by island dogs, how about a “Holy Sh@@! I better run faster cam” with it showing those little tetth almost reaching your ankles. It’s just an idea.

Y’know, I’ve been visiting the same north shore beaches five years in a row, soon to be six. And the repeat visits never get old. Neither would repeat beach breaks, whatever the view.

A little St. Thomas/St. Croix wouldn’t hurt either, even though it’s not On St. John.

Is that the Peter Bay “Beach Path” sign when it was brand new?

It looks so different now that I couldn’t be sure it was the same sign. But the Peter Bay sign has knots under and to the right of the “P” in “Path”, just as this one does. So unless it’s an amazing coincidence, it is the same sign.

In fact, I think the sign is the same, but it’s in a different location now. It just looks TOO different to be the same place.

Like anyone really cares, ha! Sorry. Back on topic, I’m with those who say keep doing St John beaches. The same beach can look so different depending on the time of day, weather, etc., you can never really repeat yourself. (And if you do, who cares? It would still be great!)

We just returned from our 20th year of visiting St. John. There is nothing better than sitting back and relaxing on any of the beautiful beaches. Our favorites are Salomon and Honeymoon. Although it is a little hike, and our children are a little older and enjoy the challenge of the hike to and from. It is well worth the effort.

We do have a suggestion for your beach break: Kid friendly beaches and beaches for parents with younger children. We noticed alot of young couples with very young children (under 5) It may be helpful bit of information.

Well, keep up the GREAT work. I read the site before going to bed every night – just to keep in touch with our “second home”.

P.S. If you were in town last week, I was walking around town with my “Rather be On St.John t-shirt. I was stopped several time with several comments.

How about a “Taxi Break?” Interview the taxi drivers – I bet they have stories …
