Sugar high

Did you know Bananaquits like sugar? Not sugar-water. Just plain old sugar. Pour some in a dish and, like John DeLorean to a rolled up hundred dollar bill, they’ll come running. Cute little birdies. Feed some Bananaquits, or as the Dutch call them, suikerdiefje (sugar thief!) below…

They will spit out artificial sweetners – is Mother Nature telling us something?

…and if you forget to put the sugar out, they’re there first thing in the morning to remind you in no uncertain terms… they’re such fun to watch.

We haven’t put sugar out for them before but we will at bongo in November! Really enjoyed today’s treat.

Hmmmm. Artifical sweeteners are one thing, but what about Splenda. I wonder if it would do to their system what it does to mine.

    DON’T ASK

We spent 12 days making sugar water five tames daily, no less, for the dozens of demanding (and how!) bananquids at our St John condo (Serendip) apartment, Glad to know that plain sugar will satisfy these cute birdies

Great video Russ! Plain sugar in a bowl is the key, although make sure you clean up the area after a feeding as the spilled sugar attracts ants, bees and other critters.

The sound of feeding bananaquits is music to my ears! Boy, can they sing pretty.

One of the things I noticed when we were there last month is that they will rub the excess sugar off of their beaks on the deck rails.

Great video! We never had THAT many. We did have to chase the sea gulls off one day so that the bananaquits would come enjoy their “crack”.

Sugar makes them hyper! Nonetheless, the first thing I do when we arrive (after the rum) is buy a big box of sugar. It’s the best entertainment around.

    OK, second best…

Great video. I’ve been wanting to watch it since you told me what you went thru to flim it. but I had to wait till I was back on highspeed internet before I could watch it.

Thanks – this was great! It has always been one of our favorite things to do in the Caribbean – feeding sugar to our birdie friends. We had a “crowd” like this at Coconuts villa on Gifft Hill every morning. More wildlife videos, please!
