I live in Chicago, where, of course, we have the best Vienna Beef Hot Dogs in the world - and the only toppings allowed are mustard, onions, tomatoes, sport peppers, neon green relish, and celery salt. (No ketchup, or you may sleep with the Lake Michigan Fishes!)

I will have to taste this strange, foreign concoction next time I am on-island….

I grew up in Chicago and have to back stj_gal on this one. The only thing I would add to the list of acceptable toppings is a slice of dill pickle, cut length-wise. Add, it all has to be on a Rosen’s bun.

I am a huge “tube steak” fan and LOVE Gold Coast Dogs in Chi-town. I have to be honest and say that I am VERY excited about this latest dining addition to STJ!! I only hope they stay in business long enough for me to get down there, since sadly, its an uphill battle for all restauarants to stay afloat on islnd. Hang on!! I’m coming!!

Ha ha to you Chicago folks…I’m from central Illinois where everybody puts ketchup on their hot dogs! :) That usually warrants a look of disgust from Chicagoans.

Oops - i forgot the pickle - I was rattling off the ingredients from the top of my head. How could I forget my favorite part? And yes, it MUST be a steamed Rosen’s bun - no substitutions allowed.

Returning to somewhat maturity…Chicago hotdogs, to me, are one of the more bizarre things I have ever seen in my life. Pickles? What?

As a former New Jersey-ite (eyan?), I’m more from the NYC dirty water dog school of thought: Sabret hot dog boiled in dirty water that smells of feet, white bread bun that looks as if the hot dog man has been sitting on it for a while, spicy brown mustard and those red onions. Heaven on a bun. To be eaten in 3, maybe 4, bites while standing on a street corner.

Hot Dogs in NC are an unnatural shade of red. They scare me.

    A lot.

Not as much as clowns do though

Have you actually had a true Chicago dog? One of the best inventions known to man. (Besides deep dish pizza, but I don’t want to start that argument here!!!)

Now I am going to have to go out and have one!

    :)

Rob and Mary Beth I am with ya! Dirty water dogs are a must have. Here in Rochester everyone loves zweigles but I just can’t seem to warm up to them. Now ya have me missing a good dirty water dog.

Chicago hot dogs are only good in Chicago!

Here in New Jersey we enjoy the foot long Thumanns !

And dirty waters are a Yankee Stadium tradition! YUM!

Wow…I started a hot dog revolution. I have never had a Chicago Dog, but it has always struck me as fundamentally wrong. It’s a NYC thing…

We were back in NYC this past May after a 5-year absence. after getting over the shock of seeing my city turned into a tourist destination, it was hot dog time. The Mrs ate them before and after dinner and then again after Midnight…in the pouring rain…in a dress and heels.

I used to work near Rutt’s and never made it there to have one. A missed opportunity.
