Beach Break: Smuggler’s Cove (The Queen’s Beach)

First things first. You’ll see a dinghy in this video and NO you cannot get to this beach by dinghy (although Capt’n Josh from Lion in da Sun was pretty impressed when he saw us.) The dinghy was attached to John Brandi’s boat which took us there. That’s the only way you can get here. Charter a boat.

This is Smuggler’s Cove on Tortola. If you’re renting a power boat or doing a sail, you MUST go here. For three reasons. 1. It is a huge beach and you’ll have it almost all to yourself. 2. Stevens. The guy who runs a little makeshift beach bar and powers his blender off his jeep. He’ll grill you up a burger, dog, fish or chicken, and he makes a mean BBC (banana, Bailey’s and coconut.) 3. The Queen’s car! This is where it is. In fact, we’ve decided to rename this The Queen’s Beach. Hope you enjoy the appropriately royal music. Smuggler’s Cove….below….

You guys are wimps. If you want a REAL adventure go by car. A few years ago we stayed at Long Bay. The road going to Smugglers was quite something. We went through potholes we didn’t think we would come out of!! BUT it was well worth the trip! This turned out to be one of my favorite beaches on Tortola.

I love the Queen pop up - you guys are so clever. I’d like a painkiller please! This is definitely on my list of beaches on my next trip to STJ. Thank you for a fabulous pick me up to a soupy day in Philadelphia.

That’s a fun one. It’s nice to see a classic BVI beach bar. It really would be nice to have a few more of those on STJ.

Smugglers Cove is probably my favorite beach on Tortola. It used to be a bit quieter before they graded the road. Now the taxis take cruise ship passengers there.

    Cheers, RickG

they finally did someting to that road? Thought sure kidney transplants were in order after one crossing! ‘Course you could walk it - Long Bay said it was an “easy” walk - maybe for some! Aren’t they planning to put a high-end villa resort there - although they’ve talked and debated about it for years - with a dock?

Great beach over there. I walked from there to West End once..easy but a very long walk! Seeing the bar reminds me, does anyone remember when Cinnamon Bay had a bar…and the bartender?

We hit Smugglers cove this past June and absolutely loved it. The snorkeling was great, the water was gorgeous and the Dirty Banana was delicious. Can’t wait to visit again.

A visit with Steven is a must for every trip. We always get a new pic made with him while drinking our rum punch. He is so much fun to talk to. Steven is my main reason for revisiting SC but it is a beautiful place. Of course in Nov. I’ll be lookin’ for the Queen’s car.

David, the bar near Cinnamon was the “Kite”, my favorite ever on island. Next in line would be the old Beni Iguanas, now the Beach Bar.
The bartender/owner was Victor and his wife, whose name escapes me at the moment. Victor is now working at the Domino station in Coral Bay and has re-printed his “2000 miles from reality” t-shirts. A beautiful classic. Right up there with our old Lindy 500 shirts.
