Breaking News: Famous palm falling
The lone palm tree that has made Sandy Spit such a picture perfect little island is about to be washed away. As seen Sunday, the Sandy Spit palm is clinging to life and could very well be gone in the next day or two. Or, maybe it can be propped up and saved. Rough seas, maybe from Dean, have eaten away at the beautiful little cay’s beach, and that palm has been the victim. Sandy Spit, last month, as seen below.

Wow! That is a bummer. Pretty impressive erosion in a short time.

I volunteer to head the Save the Palm tree group. Just send me a ticket and me and my shovel are on the plane!
It really is a shame,I hope that it can be saved.

It is my understanding that Sandy Spit is a coral atoll. I have seen the palm tree pictured in the same dramatic situation a couple of different times over the last three years. The sands shift around the island at various times of the year, wind directions, and swells contributing most I imagine. Every other time the sands have shifted around in time so hopefully this will be the same. Sometimes there is more sand up front, sometimes there is more in the back.

What a shame! Made me think of my honeymoon driving by to Abe’s by the Sea for lobster with John gibney and Jerry singer. Just a thought…Abe’s is so overshadowed by Ivan, Foxy and the other stops on Yost, but the lobster is incredible and Abe is a charm. should do a blog on him!

Does anyone know if they were able to save the tree or if it is a goner??
