Do you stop here?

Or maybe a better question is should you stop here? We don’t stop here. And most everybody doesn’t stop here. But then again, some people stop here. This is the intersection just before Marketplace. I mean, it is an intersection and there is a stop sign, but if you’re going straight there is no apparent reason to stop. Unless you’re turning right. Then you should stop. But in 7 years I’ve never quite known for sure about going straight ahead. This much is for sure. Hiding behind that truck, or one just like it, you may just meet the law. The fuzz likes to hide there looking for people without their seatbelts on. But stopping? Do you?

I havent stopped once in 7 years. I mean in the car, not the beers. Do you ever really stop at any stop sign? Sometimes I have to stop on centerline when a concrete truck is in front of me, or if I really have to pee. Just be respectful of other drivers and pedestrians and its all good.

When going straight, never. Why would you?

Being a tourist that only visits once a year, I always stop, look around, then proceed with caution . . . rum & drivin’ don’t mix, but then on STJ it just might!

Going straight, we don’t stop…turning right, definitely stop.
As you know, Candi’s BBQ is on the left, next to where the truck is pictured. That intersection is great entertainment while waiting for your food order. Grab a cold one, sit at one of her tables and watch the mayhem. Ah, that’s good times.

stop there? no! only if I’m making a right and why would I do that, I just came from there

If there is confusion over this intersection - Just think what lies ahead with the upcoming ROUNDABOUT intersection. Yes, Sir you can have a beer in hand but OMG just make sure you have your seat belt on! … and like Bob Marley says, ” don’t worry about a ting cause every little ting gonna be alright.”

Don’t stop if you are going straight! I should know. I told John to stop there once and we got slammed in the back by a local. OK, slammed is exaggerating. Tapped in the back. He got out and told us not to stop at that intersection unless we were turning right.
One of these days John is finally going to stop listening to my bad backseat driving suggestions.

I always stop with my seatbelt on and cold Carib in hand!

When I was there is July I always stopped, but I wondered why it was necessary. And, oh yeah, I did think, “What if I get a ticket while I’m down here, does that mean I have to come back down here for Court?” Oh, Mr. Policeman, please give me a ticket. :>)

I started stopping there the day I saw the tree crew trimming the tree and brush away from the sign so it was visible. Now that I see it, it is force of habit…

You must stop here. Doesn’t make much sense, I know, but I do know people that have gotten tickets for running this stop.

Hahaha too funny! We had a discussion about this on our last visit. We decided to quit stopping if going straight, stop only if turning right. Looks like we might have figured it out?

THE FEW TIMES I STOPPED I GOT HONKED AT BY THE DRIVERS BEHIND ME….SO I STOPPED STOPING.
SO WHAT’S THE LAW?

I think the law is: No cop, no stop.

We were confused at first too, because there is a stop sign, but we decided that was just for turning right. But then we thought, well there is a crosswalk there too so then we started stopping! More confusion! Or was that the rum? On our first visit we asked about the drinking/driving laws and our taxi driver said “Wear your seat belt, mon” !!!!

There’s a stop sign there??? With a D & D in tow…and seatbelt buckled…why stop to diminish the traffic flow.

We often discuss this very matter. I tell my husband, the official vacation driver, “Hey! You’re supposed to stop!” His reply, “You should only stop if turning left, no need to stop when going straight.”
So - what’s the correct, legal thing to do?
September 25th, 2007 18:37
We used to stop there, then started noticing that no one else did, so now we don’t.
September 25th, 2007 21:13
As I mentioned, we don’t stop when going straight either. But, if you look at the photo, you will notice that there is a white stop line in the left lane as well as in the right lane. I don’t know if that means anything…probably not.
Jeff…can’t you get the official word from some high-ranking STJ police official?
September 25th, 2007 21:30
Considering my July request for an interview reqarding the new cop on a bike in Cruz Bay still hasn’t come through I would say Pete…I’ll work on it.
September 25th, 2007 21:51
Pete, you are so right … you can blow through a crosswalk without getting a ticket. But, watch out for the cop who likes hiding behind the blue truck, he likes to catch you not wearing your seatbelt!

If you are stupid enough not to stop you could end up killing a child. One was killed there not that many years ago because someone didn’t stop! So STOP! My god do you really want to be the cause of a child’s death? I have always stopped as have everyone I know especially those who responded to the accident that took a young boy’s life from him.
