Big Maho saved, Little Maho for sale…
The big headline Tuesday was that the Trust for Public Land FINALLY pulled off its bid to buy almost 420 acres of land at Maho Bay. The subhead that you probably missed is that ON THE VERY SAME DAY the owners of all the land Maho Bay Campgrounds sits on was put it up for sale. For $32 million, you can buy the entire 13.88 acres. The listing:“A rare opportunity to own a W-1 property on St. John on the beach. Also includes 3ba 3bb and parcel 1 Estate Abraham’s Fancy. Gorgeous color brochure available upon request.”
The operator of Maho Bay Campground has a lease that runs through 2012, so any buyer would have to honor that., and he also has first right to buy it. Barring that, it’s up for grabs.
We need 32 friends. Oh who are we kidding. We need 320 friends. We don’t even know 320 people. You?

The Jimmy Buffett angle could really work. We can name it Mahoritaville if he picks up 4/5ths of the deal. Are we all in for the rest? I’m in!

I believe it is Warren Buffett that has the money!
September 26th, 2007 09:20
Maybe Warren AND Jimmy…
Is the Trust for Public Land ready for another project?

Good thinkin’ Jim! LOL! Count me in, too. ANYthing that saves that much more of beautiful StJ from more condos or villas is a good idea, IMHO.
September 26th, 2007 12:34
I am in……….there has got to me someone who loves STJ as much as all of us and has $$$$
hmmmmmmmm. no more development please…..

It is wonderfull that the property has been saved for the park but I am affraid its a double edged sword as the isolation and beauty that is gauranteed by this addition to the park will also make the additional property for sale that much more attractive to potential developers/buyers. Short of another very wealthy donor it is likely that this one will bet developed. That said given the pace of permits, the remaining lease for Maho and the speed of constructio on the islands it could take 15 years to happen.

How about contacting Kenny Chesney (or at least adding him to the solicitation list which includes Buffet (both of them
), Gates, etc.
September 26th, 2007 18:28
Hmmm… who else loves St John and has lots of money? Must be a good handfull of celebrities that already own a piece– maybe we can take up a collection from the folks at Peter Bay and a few other upscale neighborhoods? or a bake sale: Wanna buy a million dollar cupcake to save Maho Bay? or a website: http://www.buy-a-piece-of-paradise-for-$100.com (all we need is 320,000 people).

Hmmmm…let’s raffle off the right to buy property. $100 tickets…the lucky winner gets the rights to buy it.Any tickets sold over $32M can go to the beer fund that allows all tickets buyers to enjoy a day at the beach with free beer.
There must be at least 320,000 people that read this daily update that can buy a ticket.

I wish it was possible to hide this information about the Maho property from developers like the ones who are building Sirenusa and Grand Bay!

We have a fundraiser every year for JESS at Caneel……..why can’t we have a fundraiser for the purchase of the land?
Since I would imagine most locals and visitors as well are tired of the over development.
I am not sure how we get this started.
I do not think Kenny Chesney will part with 32 million even for STJ………we could get 10 million from him I think………:)
September 27th, 2007 09:20
The bake sale is probably not a good idea. Kenny looks like he hasn’t eaten in years. He does love STJ and I’m sure he has $32 million, though… What else is he going to spend it on? Flip-flops and sleeveless tees?
