That’s one big tree

Know where this tree is? Cinnamon Bay. Behind the T’ree Lizards restaurant to be exact. It’s called a Rain Tree, and it has to be one of the biggest and oldest trees on the island. The Cinnamon Bay guys say it flowers too, although we’ve never seen that. This tree is at least 70 feet tall, and with Russ and his 30 inch waist standing there, you can get an idea of how big around it is.

T’ree Lizards restaurant is open for lunch by the way (at least when that big placard is out there). It’s not great food, but it’s not bad. It’s not fast service, but it’s friendly. And, as a day-tripper to Cinnamon Bay, your only other choice is the snack shack on the beach where you can get a Snickers Bar and a Red Stripe. (Not that a Snickers Bar and a Red Stripe on Cinnamon Beach is that bad of a thing….)

That tree is gorgeous. You should have hugged it for the photo Russ! Who cares if people are staring! The only time we knew the restaurant was open was when we smelled hamburgers cooking. It made us hungry even though we packed a few sandwichs and we went up there and spent a lot of time waiting for burgers and chips, but it was really good when you are hungry and sunburned. There was only one waitress at that time.

Sidenote: Jeff and Russ, you need to stop in Yacht Haven for some “BAD ASS” coffee. It is coffee from Hawaii and it is sooooo good and that is the real name.

Ah.. for the days when Cinnamon Bay used to have a bar… but that was before painkillers, so I guess this is all part of progress.

What is the botanical name? Where is it indigenous to? Is it also called a ‘Monkey pod’? Is it an Albizia saman? What color are the flowers? How often does it flower? How ‘OLD’ is it? Who planted it? These are things I want to know !!!! I’m sure someone on St John knows all the answers!!!
    Jeff, find out!!!!!!

No bar? I was drinking some frozen rum concoctions as well as happily sucking beer there a few months ago… when did that happen?

What an awesome tree! Speaking of trees, is anyone familiar with Bob Garrison aka the “Trail Bandit?” He is profiled in the Dec. issue of Backpacker magazine, about his quest to rehabilitate unused trails in St. John. I tracked down his site, which includes maps of “secret” trails not found on current USGS maps. I’m planning on finding some of these when I’m on the island in Dec. Also, looks like the Bandit would make an excellent interview subject for on-st.john.com…http://www.trailbandit.org/index.htm

Glad to see some BB updates– that’s been a fascinating adventure to follow. … Cinammon Bay is a great place to stay and an evening at T’ree Lizards, especially if they have music, is a lot of fun. The food is simple but it’s always a step up from eating a can of beans at your campsite. The lights and fans are on all night, so people sit up late and read, play cards, talk, and drink (BYOB).
