Royal Caribbean opens St. John outpost

Royal Caribbean, one of the big duty free chains on St. Thomas, is getting ready to open a location at Mongoose Junction. Cameras, watches, jewelry, etc. How should you feel about this? Well, on the one hand, it seems like an awfully cruise shippy thing to open on St. John. On the other hand, Royal Caribbean also carries lots of electronics including computer stuff and high-end audio and video gear which is something you can’t find much of on St. John. Anyway, it’s a pretty big space that they’re renovating now, on street level below Paradiso. Opening soon.

Funny I was just wondering the other day if there was a place in STJ to get media cards in the event I forgot or lost them heaven forbid. Guess the answer is - soon come.
Does it seem likely it will be open by the end of the month?

Little Switzerland used to be in Mongoose way back and they also had an “outpost” in Red Hook.

WOW, has St. John changed! There was a time when all you could buy was a cheesy t-shirt or rum balls.

We really like the people at the Royal Caribbean stores. They were honest with us on what was a good deal and what was more expensive than the stateside prices. We bought a lot from them in two years on island. Hopefully it is the same people opening the store on STJ. I don’t know if there is a big enough market for them, but still wish them well.

Is STJ changing quickly or is it that I am just noticing?

Well, I guess this will eliminate any reason to jump on the ferry and go to CA. Bring CA to St. John (just not the cruise shipers). Yeah! Bring it on!

I think that this will be nice to have. There isn’t anyplace on St. John to buy the kind of camera stuff they sell–Cruz Bay photo is mostly disposable cameras and regular film, etc. I had to go to the Royal Caribbean on St. Thomas to replace my camera when I broke it mid-trip, and it was a hassle to get there and wasted most of a day.

It’s not like it’s going to draw crowds of people from St. Thomas, they will shop at the St. Thomas locations. It will, however, be convenient for the people staying on St. John.

Guess it will be good for those who live there also. Little Switzerland had a store on St. John? Don’t remember that but I do remember the Radio Shack. It was downstairs from Grumpy’s….but then who remembers Grumpy’s?

David, I remember a lot of Grumpys when I took my jeep to get it inspected. :)
