Ka-Bloom
Oh-kay. Days of rain. Followed by warm sun. Equals?
IT’s called a “mosquito bloom” which sounds so pretty which of course it’s not. They’re also called mosquito “bites”. “Pricks” would be better…on so many levels.
Rain stopped. Mosquitoes out in full force. Entire neighborhoods get sprayed in a couple of days, but in the meantime villas are fully armed. If there was Napalm in a can I would put it out. There are only two ways to beat mosquitoes. Chemicals and zappers. Oh. A third way. Rum. (In you, not on them. They don’t like thin blood.)

I’m shipping my box to Christys in a week or so. I had some mosquito products of my own inside. Guess I’ll take those out of the box, looks like “The Bongo” has it covered! Maybe they will be gone in three weeks.

Apparently there is yet one more alternative other than the aforementioned chemicals, zappers, and rum.
I have not tried this product so I cannot recommend it. A Google search reveals nothing that would indicate that it’s merely snake oil. So if anyone has any personal experience with the product I’d be anxious to read about it.
The product is called “Best Yet” and is made by a company called CedarCide.

Hmmmm…maybe the rum is why I had three bites and my traveling companions were all covered.
The Cruzan folks need to start an ad campaign. I’d have drunk more if I’d known it was like Off, but tastier.

We travel in a group of 4 and the other husband is our mosquito repellent. He gets attacked and the 3 of us sit in the sun. He gets eaten alive wherever we go.
But…where can one get those electric tennis racquets in the states? I need one for work. A coworker of mine has a bald head that’s just itching to get zapped.

We left the car window open last night. Today, we had a mosquito terrarium. It was fun driving out to Coral Bay, we needed the zappper!
By the way, we stopped by Bongo yesterday after visiting Allesandra. You need to warm the pool up a bit.

Avon SKIN SO SOFT PLUS BUG GUARD. It has something that really repels mosquitos and the like. I used Skin-So-Sodt for years in Maine during the summer to repel black flies, “the state insect”.

For information, always ask a bartender. That’s what I did in 2000 when I was down there for 6 months. When the little buggers are after you, rub GIN on exposed areas. Worked for me , or maybe I got Tanqed twice as fast and didn’t care.

I’ve used an all natural product called “So Long Skeeters!” with great success. It’s available on line from a company in Vermont called Hug-a-Dub-Dub. Products for mothers, babies etc. Their website is hugadubdub.com. Check it out.

Rum, that’s interesting…I’ll have to try that next time.
I’m one of those people that in a group of 10 is always the one to be covered head to toe with bites. When we come in Feb/Mar it isn’t as big of a deal as when we come in November. Last time we went in the fall I had to take Benedryl just to be able to sleep because I couldn’t stop scratching my skin. And honestly no matter what bug spray I’ve tried - nothing works.

We spent alot of time on the beach and learned years ago that the ONLY way to keep the no-see-ums from biting is GIN. Don’t drink it - rub it on. And the cheaper the gin, the better the effect (because if it’s cheap, it hasn’t been over-distilled). Something to do with the juniper berry being a natural bug-repellent…
ask me about painting outdoor ceiling blue… cool story.

We just spent the last 10 days on STJ, and we got more bites than ever. Thankfully, Steve, the bartender at the Balcony told us about gin. He poured some on a cloth napkin and we rubbed it on our ankles, and the itch went away! But the best treatment so far was benedril cream. Next trip I’m taking some with me so it won’t cost so much $$$. BTW, I loved the new gormet store at the Starfish. They’re hiring!
