Gourmet Day

The long-awaited Starfish Gourmet shop is now open to the public. You’ll have to check it out for yourself to see if it’s your cup of tea. (Or coffee, and there’s lots of both.) In brief, lots of services, including platters. It’s big on cheese including gigantic wheels of artisans like world champ Dutch gouda Rembrandt, and meats, including a big pile of tasty looking smoked duck breasts. Shelves of chocolate. Walls of wines. And barrels of olive oils. You choose your bottle and buy it. Then come back and fill it back up. If you’re on-island this month, stop by for the daily wine tastings, and say hello to Paul, the manager. A nice guy who is probably very glad to finally get the doors open.

Can hardly wait to get to STJ and go shopping at Starish, Looks like the type of specialty gourmet shop one would expect to see in a big city, Love the idea of all that olive-oil selection. Good luch to the owners.

NICE! I was going to pack some cheeses for this trip but now perhaps not. You don’t seem impressed though - not your cup of tea?

My credit card would get a work-out in that place!

The $3.99 bottle of rum at Starfish is more in my price range!!

    Mary Beth:

I was actually very impressed. It was also a madhouse when I was in there, so it was a little overwhelming and hard to soak it all in. It’s a great addition for the kind of shopper they’re aiming for.

Yum! You can never have too much cheese. I would love someone to report back on what they are charging for their products.

Hey Paul (if your reading this)
There is this great cheese that is kind of brown and marbled in color and is made with Guinness beer. I think it is called Guinness Porter cheddar. It is fantastic. I can’t get it here, but was hoping for some when I am there! Hint Hint! You need to check it out.

Hey wontongirl, we usually have that in our good old Costco’s out here in Los Angeles. I love it.

Some friends stopped by yesterday on the way to cocktail hour at our house to buy some wine and check it out. They brought us a can of nuts - they were $10.99 for 12 oz of nuts!!!!! (full disclosure: they were good nuts.)

It’s time for lunch here. Between “Gourmet Day” and “Susie Christy”, I’m about to starve! Thanks for keeping us posted.

Did you check prices? It’s still probably a good idea to bring stuff with you but those shelves look nice.

I bought a bottle of Merlot called “Funky Llama” for $4, plus they threw in a free starfish wine stopper! What a deal, I love grand openings.

    To St. John:
Hurry up and drink the “Funky Llama” and report back! I’m going there tomorrow. Is it a recomended buy at $4.00?

Great place! Went in last week during the grand opening. We happened to be there the day an entire wine shelf collapsed…covering the floor with glass and red wine. We felt horrible for them. But, they took it in stride and considered the store “christened”. Excellent fresh bread (French), cheese, and gourmet food selection.
Not too expensive considering the products — much like Fresh Market prices on the east coast.
