From plates to purses
Here’s something I never thought I’d say: I just bought a purse. A big one too. And some lucky On-StJohn.com reader is going to get it. We just have to figure out how we’re giving it away.
Not just any purse. This is a very special purse that you can get only at the new Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park gift shop. The grand opening is tomorrow and these purses won’t last long. They’re made from old Friends of the VINP license plates by a company called Little Earth Productions.
Next time you’re down, stop in the store at Mongoose Junction and say “hi” to Angie Gorneau, the manager. (You might also recognize her from her night job waiting tables at ZoZo’s.)
Now….how will we give away this purse? ($105 retail value by the way!)

Two years ago we searched hi and low for the same purse but at that time it was the aqua and white license plate. That was all my daughter wanted for her birthday present - since we celebrate every year on St. John. We did find it and it wasn’t easy. Unfortunately, I didn’t buy myself one - well, it would be a great surprise to find on Christmas morning under the tree! That would start out the New Year with a Bang!

Perhaps you could give it away to the first person who posts a comment today… Happy Thanksgiving!

Have a contest where the winner is the first person to move back to St. J from the New Jersey shore after being exiled to the states for nine years. Hope to see you all soon - be back down Jan. 3rd for three months!

that’s clever! We arrive tomorrow and I will stop in the shop for sure. Happy Thanksgiving!

I think that you should have a contest and give the purse to the person that used to live on island and now has the largest purse collection. I am a purse junkie and I am foaming at the mouth right now.

How about for the silliest St. John photo?

How about an online treasure hunt using info from past postings at this site! I just found this site the other day while looking out the window at work with my turtleneck sweater and having been forced by mother nature to wear socks and shoes, dreaming of my March trip to St. John. (Trip #5 and counting). I love the videos you all put on. I can’t believe how much things have changed! Someone kiss the ground for me there. I’m waiting to bury my feet in her warm sand.

We still have our personalized license plates from STT with the pic of Magens on it. I don’t have a purse, but we do have one still on the front of our truck. I don’t think that wins me anything, but what a cool idea they have! I have a friend who makes purses out of cigar boxes and she is going to make me one out of a Cuban cigar box that I bought on STT. Maybe you could have an auction and donate the money to an STJ charity? Sorry, it is the holidays and that is all I can think about right now. I am sure you will be creative. I will be on island in January and will see if any are left. Happy Holidays everyone!

I actually saw one of these purses for the first time on STX. It was in April at the Taste of St. Croix - held at the Divi Carina and mobbed with people. I tried to catch up with the woman who was rocking it - with DH in tow I wove in and out of the crowd trying to keep the woman in site while not bumping into the tables of food and wine in my path. I would almost catch up with her and then a bunch of folks would get in our way and I would lose her again. But I had a goal, had a quest, pushed on, dragging a protesting DH. Weaving around the pool a couple in a hurry really got in my way and wouldn’t yield - you guessed it - into the pool I went! When I came up for air I begged with DH to keep on after her - after all of this I would not lose info on that bag! (BTW, I think I’m the reason that pictures of this event show yellow crime scene tape ringing the pool - it seems that went up after I got out.) So, wonderful DH races on and chases her all the way down the road to her car where he tried to talk to her but she turned on him and tried to whack him with the coveted handbag thinking he was some mad stalker. Well, he was mad, by that time: “Lady, if you are going to ruin that bag by hitting me with it I’ll just buy it from you now and we can all call it a day!” Unfortunately, she would not sell it but did disclose that she bought it on STT - except she could nor remember where - had indulged in a few Painkillers during her shopping spree. So, all for nothing, except that once I dried out we had a great time at the Taste of STX. Was on STT in May but couldn’t find the right shop. I still want that bag…
