Your penny isn’t welcome
Did you know Starfish Market routinely rounds the checkout price down to the nearest nickel? If the register says $56.72, the checker will say $56.70. Seriously. You probably don’t even notice. Watch next time. And when that register drawer pops open, look in it. You’re likely to see maybe one very unwelcome penny in there. Whether or not this is actually a formal store policy, we don’t know. But they don’t ever round UP, so they’re not making it up over the course of the day.
I know they’re just pennies, but in the course of a year at a grocery store, that’s got to add up to some sort of figure with a comma somewhere in it.

I wish more stores would do away with pennies. This rounding down feature at Starfish is only for cash purchases, they charge your credit card for the full amount.

I noticed that when I lived on island………I thought it funny……not sure any other vendor does it…….

Good one Colleen!!! Got a smile out of that one! I wonder if the store owners KNOW that their employees do that??? mmmm…glad they don’t work for me…..I agree that’s got to add up and quickly in tourist season.

You know, I noticed that too, but just figured no one wants to be bothered with pennies.
I hate pennies. I have actually thrown away pennies.
Frankly, I was more surprised that they don’t round up.

It’s not a case of the employees choosing not to accept pennies. It’s the store policy.

At least they don’t give you change in candy and postage stamps like they used to do in Italy… or roll their eyes and say “Porca Miseria” if you don’t have exact change. Pennies are useless and I salute the workers of Starfish for being so sensible…

They have been doing this for almost 10 years, if I remember correctly. (which is entirely not possible based on the amount of run I consumed whilel living on island)

I think the best deal at Starfish is a pack of Combos. They are .79 cents and if you pay with a dollar you get a quarter back. That is almost 5% savings instantly!

I wonder why they don’t round up!?!

stj_gal : Throw them my way!!!
My father-in-law (also a business man) always said if you watch your pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves!

AHA!
We can finally save a bundle at Starfish - by paying cash for our groceries one item at a time. Thanks, Josh!

Good point Colleen!Jeff, could you,and/or others who shop on Island frequently remind us what the prices are for commonly purchased food items?I’m always shocked, but never want to deal with the hassle of hauling stuff with us.Remind me,I’ll request food items for Xmas this year!
