Put this on your list
When I was a kid, my Mom had a knack for making chores sound like fun, so taking a cue from Mom, here’s something you’d really enjoy. The Friends of the VINP is asking villa management companies to put this flier in villa activity books, hoping visitors will volunteer a couple of hours during their vacation to help clean up a ruins site or a trail or a beach. Think about doing it. The morning outings are scheduled twice weekly. You just show up at the NPS maintenance lot next to Mongoose Junction, and you’re drafted. Do some good, meet new people, learn a thing or two! More information here.

Whether or not it makes its way into my villa pack,it’s been printed and will go into my St John folder down in the office.
Sounds like a fun idea

The panther is REAL. I swear on my daughter’s name. I say this as a life long skeptic and somone who was less than 20 feet away from it for a terrifying four and a half minutes on a clear, sober afternoon in 2003.
Where did I see it, you ask? You would never believe me - no one ever does.
Good call JD, the saga of St John’s panther deserves a feature. How bout it Jeff?

What about setting up some videos like they do to monitor deer that pass through an area. No, actually they set up heat senors that take photos of what passes underneath it. Maybe pinpoint the areas the cat has been and set the cameras up there- then wait and see. Maybe there’s hundreds of them- who knows?

Smack in the middle of the Westin grounds - right between the lobby building and the set of rooms immediatly to the east. A housekeeping employee and I watched from a golf cart for almost five minutes as it tracked a scent right across the lawn at 5:30 in the afternoon. Slipped into the bush….gone. It’s about 3 feet high and 4 feet long with a tail that’s at least three feet long. Velvety black from head to tail. The thing is real and may not be dangerous, but is proudly fearless - as any self respecting panther should be.

Is “Northside Massive” pulling our leg? I bet he saw a big stray Cruz Bay dog and thought it was a panther!

I hear the Puma feasts on Westin guests; they taste like chicken.

Good read on cougars/pumas: The Beast in the Garden. (Boulder,Colorado). St. John version would be the Beast in the Villa Pool.
January 16th, 2008 18:55
OK, who is in charge of providing Puma Proof?
I sure hope it isn’t me.
KnitWit,
The St. John version could also be “The Beast in the Villa Fountain.” That could work here.

I’m gunna volunteer on my next visit in June, I look forward to it. I had no idea I could do this, so thanks for sharing! This makes me happy.

So happy to see this feature! My husband is the Volunteer Coordinator at Acadia National Park and we were already planning to volunteer when we visit St. John in March. Will ask our villa owners to include the flier in their info pack, if they haven’t already. By the way, my Mom used to make chores sound like a priviledge: “You MAY do the dishes.”

Pretty terrible that this story is about cleaning up the environment and all people can do is go on about a cat. Sad world we live in.

Suzy,
Alot of underlying commentary about changing habitat dynamics going on in the panther talk. Sorry it was missed on you.
