Reef Bay Coastal Hike: Part One

Destination: The Reef Bay sugar mill ruins, and the Petroglyphs! Gerald Singer’s “Off the Beaten Track” was our guide, and it was spot on accurate on every detail. We’ll take you on this hike in a few installments. Chapter One: We start at the trail head, hike down the hill and along the breezy beach. (And I should remind you, we have a flare for the dramatic.) Very well done man, great quality and narration, great job guys! I liek Gerald, he’s seems like an interesting guy, especially after his 1st interview with you guys about his book.

it looks like you entered the trail in fish bay behind someone’s house and their meter box. is it an official entrance or an un-named entry?

To Tina,

I’ve hiked this trail and you do in fact enter at a spot that looks like it’s between two pieces of private property. There’s no official govt. sign until you get partway down the hill. I don’t know how that works. Is there an official easement allowing entry to National Park land? If someone can shed light on this it would be much appreciated.

Looks great…but have a thought/question? When he says “easy”, is this speaking from a 20-something’s perspective or would it still be “easy” for let’s say someone who is a little older than he is??….just curious. (we would love to hike some of these trails; just want to be smart/wise about it).

my first stay on stj was at
second wind villa in reef bay and we took
that walk down to the beach.
alot of surfers go here to catch some waves.
btw-second wind was very nice.
great job on camera work.

tina- yes the entrance is next to a meter box and it is the official entrance to the trail. when i
was there the entrance wasn’t marked.
i think the stj trail map has info about
the trail entrance.

WHOA! Talk about dramatic! While you were sitting, perched on that rock with your foot stretched out……the tension was almost unbearable, not knowing if the surf would ever come up and rinse the sand off!! I’m glad ti worked out.

Can’t wait for the next installment! Great job guys!

So…how does it work if you go with the NPS-led tour? Do you cab it to the head, walk it and then take a boat back? This year is the year I’m seeing the petroglyphs in person!

I love hiking, but love the jungle treks and the ocean scene. I hope we can enjoy flora and fauna inland, as well. Lizards and snakes and more…please tell me this is possible?

ok gents, that was pretty cool … however, can we take up a collection to get Mr. Jeff some trail hiking shoes or better yet some hybrid trail/water sandals (Keen’s ?) ? Beat up sneaks’ is not recommended footwear for trails, boulders, cliffs and whatnot. Your very lucky you did not get died.

I’ll kick in the first $2.15.

Rob – That was the Reef Bay Coastal Hike, not the Reef Bay hike. Reef Bay Hike is much longer and you can take a side trail to the petroglyphs. I did it with the NPS. You can take the boat ride back to the dock. I think it was like$20 including the taxi ride to the trail head on Centerline Rd.

Very nice! Another cool side trip from Reef Bay Trail is to a Great House off of the trail towards Lameshur. It’s partly restored, and rather charming. There are also some other ruins along the way which still have a lot of “artifacts” (junk) scattered about… cooking pots and broken jars and stuff… evidence that people lived there not too long ago. Mmmm… history…

Thanks stjfromnj…I kinda thought they might be different trails. I didn’t remember ever seeing anything about a beach on the hike.

Not a good hike for the bee allergic. I got stung by a wasp walking around the sugar mill ruins. It got caught under the tongue of my shoe. Ouch. Also lots of honeybee hives in the bush.

I can’t WAIT to swim there. I just want to do a belly flop right off the cliff. I won the belly flop contest on Royal Caribbean caribbean cruise. I can make a wake like a whale- all those double chessburgers are paying off!

Very nice! We’ve driven by looking for the trail head and never found it. Thanks for that image at the beginning that we can use as a landmark.
