Meet our newest advertiser: Homer Hickam

Google Homer Hickam. Wait, not now. When you’re done here. This guy has had something to do with everything from a blockbuster Hollywood movie to the Olympic Torch to the International Space Station to David Letterman to the Hokies touchdown cannon. And he’s a NYT Best Selling author too. So why are we writing about him? Because he spends much of his time on St. John these days. One of the island’s quiet celebrities. Oh, and he has a new book out about a rich woman who falls in love with a coal miner and the story starts and ends on St. John. Watch the video below if you want to see Homer talk about his latest book, “Red Helmet.” You can order a copy through our online store.
Homer is on the road promoting the book right now, so our interview was of the e-mail sort. Read our Q&A with Homer Hickam here! (you really should read this. He’s an interesting guy.) Then you can Google him.

As a fellow Hokie, I’m delighted to hear that Homer and I also have a love of St. John in common. Definitely going to read Red Helmet now! Thanks guys for a great interview, something quite different. I mean the subject, not the interview. You know.

How interesting! My Grandfather and uncles were coal miners in WV not far from Mr.Hickam’s hometown. Thanks for introducing him to us, guys.

Very cool. Great interview. I, of course, had no idea Hickam had a STJ connection– talk about making a likeable guy even more likeable.

As the granddaughter of an Ohio coal miner (very close to WV), I’m definitely going to read this book. It sounds fascinating.
Not bad for a coal miner’s son, indeed.

Another grand child of miners here. Both of my grandfathers worked in the mines of Southern WV. I was born and raised in WV, although we live in the islands now. I sure understand the draw. Jeff great interview with an interesting person to say the least.

Very cool! I’d love to visit your lovely island someday but for now I’ll just have to be happy living here in Rocket City USA same as Homer. I’ve read the book and highly recommend it. And if you want to learn a little more about Homer and how he started writing, he’ll be guest blogging with us Wednesday February 6 at www.writingplayground.blogspot.com
