Best bargain on the island

We had our semi-annual flat last week. I don’t know if flats are just a fact of island life, or if we have rotten luck, but we’ve got changing a Jeep tire down to a science. We don’t even groan anymore. 15 minutes, tops. And then there’s the “getting the bad tire fixed” part. The E&C gas station is your best friend if this happens to you. Drop off the flat in the morning and pick it up the same afternoon. Or if you’re REAL patient, just wait for it. And here’s the bargain part. They charge $6 to plug a flat. That’s a bargain. I even said this time “You should charge twice this much you know.” To which the young lady said “I’d be happy to take $12.” And people say the schools aren’t teaching these kids math. (I gave her 10.)

Oh…Rock Balancing Guy Phillip A. Long, barely back in Virginia a day, has posted pictures of his latest Frank Bay sculptures. At his Website, here.

I had a flat last time I was there. Took it back to St John Car Rental and they changed it on the side of a cliff.

I also had a flat last week in my rental car in NJ. It was 33 degrees and raining. I ditched the car and got a ride to my hotel. The following morning, I drove it to another parking lot…on the rim. It was a Chevy Trailblazer.

    Nobody washes a rental.

    About flat tires…
When we lived on island, I had tourists come up to me and tell me my tires needed changing or I could accidentally roll my Explorer. They were right as many Explorers do roll if you pop a tire at the wrong moment. The problem we had is that we couldn’t find Michelin tires on island. We settled for some unheard of brand, but only had a one flat that I recall.

Of course, rentals get used and abused more - not by you I am sure - which makes a flat more likely. Everything is more expensive on STJ! You can get a tire plugged on STT for $5 and no wait! We didn’t believe our friends at first, but it is true! Strange island ways!

P.s. That rock balancing act looks unbelievable. I have seen pics before, but thought they were cemented together or something. Thanks for getting the real info!
