(FIXED!) Jeep Cam: Gifft Hill Road, Part One
Sorry about that guys. This should play for everybody. (And as noted by AJR, those big potholes have been getting filled in the last few days.) Now, name some houses!
The bad news about Gifft Hill Road is that the South Shore side of it has gone to Hell in a hand-basket in the last couple of years. The good news is the Centerline Road side of Gifft Hill Road is a kind of nice ride. So, if you’re staying in Virgin Grand Estates, or even at a closer to South Shore Road villa, you can always opt for a Centerline approach.
But it’s not like you need a Unimog to drive the South Shore Road side. Just a little patience. (Show of hands. How many of us knew what a Unimog was before yesterday? See how much you learn here?)
We’ll go the South Shore route this time, and go as far as Virgin Grand Estates. And we’ll make YOU do the work this time. We’ll pass a half dozen really popular rentals (all with killer views from up here.) How many can you name?
Strapped in? 4X4 engaged? Gifft Hill Road, South Shore side, below!

Video seems to be broken
February 15th, 2008 07:10
Uh-oh, I pulled my seatbelt tight put myself in 4×4 and can’t seem to get past the Jeep Cam intro. What’s up?
We just left VG Estates 2 weeks ago, the ride down Gift Hell, I mean Hill, Road was a new experience each day.
February 15th, 2008 07:15
I can’t get this jeep cam to play (is it just me??) Figures, I am actually staying at Vistaero at April and really want to see this ride
February 15th, 2008 07:35
Technical difficulties? Or are you just teasing us?
February 15th, 2008 07:42
HEY GUYS….just so you know….this isn’t working. It loads to Courtesy Car Rentals and then freezes
February 15th, 2008 07:47
IS my wife’s computer going insane or was this just one long commercial?
(The video won’t play and all I hear is Jeff extolling the virtues of Courtesy Car Rental. On the bright side…dulcet tones!)
February 15th, 2008 07:51

February 15th, 2008 08:01

a portion of the jeep cam intro.

on the bottom really zips accross.
i checked a couple previous clips and they still
work fine.

Video not working for me
It starts out okay then stops just as you make the turn onto Gifft HIll Road.
February 15th, 2008 08:47
Mine wouldn’t work either. Are you trying to tease us this morning?
February 15th, 2008 09:01
I keep getting stuck at the crater in the road - literally
February 15th, 2008 09:06
Worked for me. I love that drive—thanks.
February 15th, 2008 09:24
Hi Guys,
Keep up the great work–we check your site every day.
Two questions. (1)Does the island really need another road hogging vehicle like a Unimog? (2) How do I make this Jeep Cam thing work?
February 15th, 2008 09:40
Well, it seems that Jim is the only lucky one so far. Doesn’t work for me either.
February 15th, 2008 09:48
Worked for me almost to the end.
February 15th, 2008 12:20
Even as I write, the Public Works crews are out there filling the potholes—they actually had gotten all the way up the hill and by late morning were at the dumpster at the top!
I really don’t think this is cause and effect, just good timing on your part.
February 15th, 2008 12:23
Still not working for me; do I need to change a setting somewhere?
February 15th, 2008 12:29
Video not working for me either.
February 15th, 2008 14:22
I thought you needed another comment that said “the video is not working.”
I still heart Jeep Cam though!
February 15th, 2008 15:57
I got about halfway through and it got stuck. Long enough for me to be hyperventilating, though. Must be an awful drive in the snow.
February 15th, 2008 16:10
it’s not working for me, either.
i can send you the jeepcam we made last november when we stayed at cocotier, if you like…
We made the mistake of only renting a 4cyl jeep, to boot…so you can really hear the engine working on that last climb to VGE.
if i can recall, they filled the potholes at least once on our 2 week stay… but i’m not really surprised to see some new ones. that road must get pretty badly beaten on.
February 15th, 2008 18:39
Ahhh the memories of our first island trip staying at Villa Capiz! Scared the crap outta me making that drive the first time after dark!
Thanks! the vid worked for me almost to the end.
February 15th, 2008 19:04
not working for me too:( Just the intro jeep sponser “commercial”. I hope this gets fixed, I’m lookin forward to this one.
February 15th, 2008 20:41
That looked like it was going to be an interesting ride until the video stopped right at that big pothole/crater!
February 15th, 2008 22:03
did anyone call 911? Maybe you guys are lost in a pothole there.
February 16th, 2008 00:02
Did anyone mention that the film seems to have broken? Time to get out the cellophane tape, rewind the reel and fire up the projector again. Or was it the bulb?
February 16th, 2008 11:00
I guess we are getting a little taste of “We’ll fix it on Island Time mon.”
February 16th, 2008 11:00
Do not look behind the curtain!
February 16th, 2008 11:00
Do not look behind the curtain!
February 16th, 2008 11:43
What’s up dudes? Are you punishing your readers for something? We may just have to start posting on the “other site”.
February 16th, 2008 19:36
Much better. I drive Gifft Hill Road for the first time in 2006 and learned several things:
the 4 bald tires on my Jeep were in fact more balder than the 4 tires in 2004 and this, indeed, made a difference.
Not only were they bald, but one of them was nearly flat
Driving on roads like those in flip flops is a bad idea. I felt utterly out of control of the gas and, mush more importantly, the brake pedal. That was bad, especially when the 4 bald and one flat tires kept losing traction and I’d be sliding backwards on the switchbacks
If you wear a yellow bathing suit and pee your pants in utter terror because of the whole bald/flat tire and flip flop thing…nobody ever needs to know
February 16th, 2008 21:37
aaahhhh… so good. You’re almost to Pine Peace school, where I wanted to enroll our kids. Only problem was that, um, uncooperative Mega Lotto…
February 17th, 2008 00:19
pretty sure I heard a tire screech on that switchback
the first 3 villas on the left are Hummingbird Hill (?), Villa Capiz I can see the # sign, I think it is 126) and Cielo Vista. I think that is their blue gate.
February 17th, 2008 10:53
Vistaero is the second turn on the right.
February 17th, 2008 11:14
brings back memories when I lived up on Gifft Hill…………you guys were lucky no trucks coming your way……….
thanks……….
February 17th, 2008 13:15
Oh Yes! know that ride very well!glad to see thier filling some potholes! did recognize hummingbird, villa capiz & cielo vista (we stayed there in 2006) we did tour Virgin estates also but i’m sure there’s even more villas in there by now! can’t waut to get back!!!! 83 DAZE to go!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the memories!
February 18th, 2008 09:04
Thanks for the ride…Brings back memories of our stay in Virgin Grand in ‘06.
Can you turn around at top and give us a ride on the way down…during/after a rain shower to give us all an E-Ticket ride.
Great Job. 39 days we soon come!!!

We stayed at Cielo Vista in October. Our villa rep had us follow him up Jacob’s Ladder and onto Gifft Hill Rd. via the South Shore Rd. When I saw him drifting into the right lane ahead of some of those switchbacks I knew we were in for a treat!
I decided to try and come and go via the Centerline route, but while I was still learning my way around we’d be heading back from town, miss out turn, and as we went past Starfish I knew we were headed for the roller coaster! Fortunately it was mostly dry, our Libery had good tires, and we never met a cement truck on any of the switchbacks!
February 18th, 2008 17:44
I want to know where the road goes after the dead end sign. Don’t think I’ve been that far.
July 7th, 2008 11:59
We are going to stay in Virgin Grand Estates and would love it if you would continue your Jeep Cam through that neighborhood!!! Just so we could get a peak at what we are in for!
