Trunk Bay is Number Nine
Another travel writer has named Trunk a top beach….blah blah blah. But here’s the deal, it comes in Number 9. Out of 10. Crackhead.
We all know there are beaches on St. John that are “better’ than Trunk in their own ways, but sometimes I get all upset when Trunk isn’t NUMBER ONE on these kinds of silly “best of” lists. (I’ve got the flu and I’m cranky. Sorry.)
Anyway, Shermanstravel.com has named a beach in the Indian Ocean as the best beach in the world. I am only guessing, but that’s probably somewhere around India. Or Africa. Or someplace that’s not a 2 hour flight from Miami. Which kind of makes it more of a missionary assignment than a vacation.
Trunk Bay, which is in the Caribbean, is number 9.
Our favorite beach in the whole world? Wow. Tough call. But it’s not between Africa and India.
As it happens, Trunk Bay is right up there, but in no particular order, Honeymoon, Oppenheimer, Solomon. You?

Solomon is the best! We love it there

…but we were married at Trunk, so it’s a great place to us too.
February 26th, 2008 01:11
Kinda partial to Jumby, ‘cuz it’s small and somewhat secluded. Haven’t been to Solomon or Honeymoon yet– we’ll check those out in a few weeks!
February 26th, 2008 06:52
Gibney and Honeymoon.
February 26th, 2008 07:09
Hawksnest and Francis. 12 days and counting!! Bongo Bongo….here we come!!
February 26th, 2008 07:50
I can’t shake this flu either. Maybe #9 on STJ, but in the world? He must have visited on a cruise ship day.
There is absolutely nothing better than daydreaming at Honeymoon or the quiet at Francis in the late summer.
February 26th, 2008 07:55
We were married on Hawksnest, so it gets our vote! You really can’t go wrong on St. John.
February 26th, 2008 08:05
…. and I thought I was the only one cranky and called out people crackheads? and I do not have the flue.
Hope you have a quick recovery, have one of the stj bush doctors make you up some bush tea or lemon grass tea.
February 26th, 2008 08:21
Maho is my favorite beach.
Hope you are feeling better soon!
February 26th, 2008 08:27
Francis for sure, so serene, peaceful.
February 26th, 2008 08:32
Maho, Hawksnest, Francis, solaman, Honeymoon. Gibney, salt pond,Vies,Jumbie and the next one I’m at
February 26th, 2008 08:39
#9? There’s no way #1 has water that perfect. No way.
As for my favorites, I’m with you guys– Honeymoon, Gibney, Solomon. And Blue Cobblestone, but just for the noise the rocks make when the water washes over them. Ahh.
Feel better soon!
February 26th, 2008 08:52
Never been to Trunk in 5 visits to STJ. Something about having to pay to sit on the most crowded beach turns me off…
February 26th, 2008 09:02
Gibney & Cinnamon! Sounds like new cocktail . . .
I’ll get working on the recipe!
February 26th, 2008 09:59
Honeymoon all the way for me. Probably because it was the first beach we went to on our first trip. That’s where I love to float in the water and let it all go. Gibney is a place I love to walk.
February 26th, 2008 10:09
I saw that #1 beach Anse Source d’Argent on a TV show and it looks simialr to the Baths area of Virgin Gorda. If that floats your boat, no need to go half way round the world.
February 26th, 2008 10:28
Maho, Honeymoon and Hawksnest!
February 26th, 2008 10:40
Well, I don’t know who this guy (Crackhead) is, but he seems to be judging the beaches by what’s on them, not the Beach itself……an underlying theme is….”beautiful, bikini clad tanned bronze bodies”……no wonder he picks the most crowded beaches as the top rated ones! Idiot.
I actually prefer Gibney, and Soloman because they are pretty much empty while I’m there…..don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the bikini clad bronze body just as much as the next guy, but I do not judge beaches by the number of them that are on the beach…..
Just MHO…

Mine is Trunk when it’s not busy, which is why I don’t care if some travel Web site ranks it number nine. I’d prefer it if the whole world didn’t know how awesome it is.
When it is busy, I’m good with anywhere on the North Shore, usually Maho.
February 26th, 2008 11:25
In my own opinion….Maho is the best.
Love it! =-) and miss it. =-(
February 26th, 2008 12:11
I hope you feel better soon! Having the flu really stinks.
February 26th, 2008 12:26
If you are still on island get one of the natives to make you some bush tea. Heck head over to Ivans and have him make you some.
That will get rid of the flu like symptoms.
I love Maho and Francis and adore Gibney.
I also like the beach at Vies too
February 26th, 2008 14:18
Hawksnest! May be biased though… (we were married there heh heh)
February 26th, 2008 14:46
Mine has to be Francis, Hawksnest, Cinnamon, Maho, then Trunk. Trunk was the first beach we went to when coming to St. John. Day cruisers :{ The Caribbean is so much nicer than the Indian Ocean. What was the man thinking?
February 26th, 2008 16:20
Hi Rosi, I mean this in a kind way, hope it comes off that way – St. Johnians and other islanders like to be referred to as locals and not natives. peace.
February 26th, 2008 19:21
My favorite beach is Turtle Bay which was right outside our bedroom at Caneel Bay – Our Honeymoon in 1987. Since then, we have brought back to St. John our children every year. I am very partial to Cinnamon due to the bathrooms, but, Solomon and Honeymoon are well worth the hike. Can’t wait – July here we come!
February 26th, 2008 20:17
Hmmm…asking to pick a fav is like asking which child is your favorite…all different and yet all have qualities that make them a ‘fav’ in some way. So, here goes; Honeymoon, Hawksnest, Gibney, Francis, Sandy Spit, Cinnamon…(Hopefully Devers where our villa is this coming April), Cane Garden, Smuggler’s, Trunk…and so on and so on..ahhhh.
32 days we soon come
Dave

We renewed our 20th anniversary vows at Hawksnest 4 years ago, but are drawn now to Francis…..Both only 2 hours from Miami, ha ha
February 27th, 2008 07:52
any where on st john is alright with me.
period.

Somehow sitting under the sea grapes at Maho with a jug of painkillers and a good book is just about a perfect day in my book. Can’t wait to get back!!
February 27th, 2008 16:43
Gibney, Maho and Francis for different times of the day. We go to others but these are the faves. We’ll be there in 105 days! But who’s counting?
February 27th, 2008 17:57
St. Johnian,
Did not take offense, however when I lived on island I was told by a St. Johnian that there IS a big difference between being a local and a St. Johnian/native. That is the only reason I used that reference. Since this person is very good friends with Mr. Benjamin I figured they were speaking the truth.
February 27th, 2008 22:42
I didn’t see any one mention Little Cinnamon. Same awesome veiw, no crowd. It is worth the short scramble or snorkel.
February 29th, 2008 19:14
Hey we should not worry about the ratings. As a matter of fact we should tell everyone how BAD the beaches are on St John. Perhaps then people would go elsewhere and our lovely beaches wouldn’t get so crowded. Crackheads!
