Four barges, all completely different boats, three of them older than dirt, all pull off a daily routine that works 90 percent of the time. When a cog in the machine breaks, that 10 percent can be hell. But here’s the whole team, sped up in about 30 seconds of graceful barge perfection…
If you’re a regular reader of St. John travel forums, you know Rick Garvin as “Rick G.” Rick is a Northern Virginia I-T guy who, whether he knows it or not, nearly qualifies as a St. John part-timer. Though he refuses to buy on the island, he’s on St. John several times a year. But he’s got roots in Northern Virginia, and his love of micro-brews (he’s a big fan of the Tap Room boys) has led to his own venture.
Rick’s investing in a brew pub near Leesburg, Va., which most DC area residents think is in the Central Time Zone but it’s not quite that far. (Rick, right, with brewmaster Bill Madden.) You can read the full story about Rick G’s off-island adventure, here.
Ahh…vineyards, bicycles, cheese and honey. Wait. This isn’t Tuscany. It’s Upper Peter Bay!
Only the view would give it away. Here is a GREAT luxo-villa… and it has more outdoor showers than it has bedrooms. (We’re supposed to talk up the villa but four bedrooms and six outdoor showers is what we came away with.)
The idea was to just spend a little chill time in the Virginia Countryside. We actually don’t chill very well. (As you can see, neither one of us could even let loose the grip on our iPhones – that’s how your comments get posted so fast.)
It’s kind of cold still, and to tell you the truth the country kind of smells. So we’re back.
But for the record, we only took 2 of our 5 vacation days. So you still owe us 3 days this year. (You’re a demanding crowd, you know that right?) Back to St. John stuff tomorrow.
The ladies loved our contest for the Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park license plate purse giveaway, so let’s have another one. This time, two purses…that say I LOVE BONGO all over them. Who would’ve known we were on the cutting edge of Haute Couture. We’re not responsible if they’re knockoffs. (It seemed like a perfectly reputable van in an alley operation to us.)
If you’re a big group, if you want to be on the Coral Bay side of the island, and if you like privacy, here’s a pretty spectacular place. Ocean Palm Villa. It’s brand new and it comes with three buildings, six bedrooms, two pools and, thrown in for good measure, two nice kitchens. And John’s Folly beach right at your doorstep.
Wedding parties? Generous boss? Big family? Put this one on your list. Ocean Palm Villa, below….
Who says St. John doesn’t recycle. Of course islanders recycle. Maybe just a little differently than elsewhere.
If you don’t know where Heineken Man is, you don’t get out much. Revisit this Beach Break from last year to get a look at the ‘hood he watches over. (Also one of our favorite music tracks ever. That’s Russ on Harmonica.)
