Meet our newest advertiser: Kalorama

Can you build a big villa on St. John without terracotta tiles on the roof and Schnell sconces on the walls? These folks did. Kalorama is not like anything on St. John and yet it feels very islandy. It is sexy, sleek and 50’s-retro chic. And it’s downright cool. This place will end up on the cover of Architectural Digest.

5 bedrooms, outstanding Virgin Grand Estates views, huge pool. Kalorama, below…

    Guys,

It’s so cool we get to tour all of these great homes On-StJohn.
Kalorama looks awesome. That kind of design is amazing. It looks like it puts you outside wherever you are –just why we love STJ. Thanks for the eye candy, guys!

It looks like a home from the 50’s in Pacific Palisades, CA.
Is it rentable? Who is renting it? Who do you contact?
I love the name, how did they come up with that?

Wow! it’s a little bigger than we need… but maybe i can convince the wife that the style will make up for the cost. anyone going in Nov want to split it with us? haha.

Palm Springs meets St. John. I’d feel like a member of the Rat Pack in that place! Truly spectacular. Although the twin beds gave me a bit of an “institution” feeling, I’m sure I’d get over it!
How much does it cost just to rent out that chaise thingy on the upper terrace? I could be happy there!

    Yipes! I’m in.

That is an admirable piece of architecture. To the owners: Nicely done.

Now I must go. Angelina and Brad are serving ‘tinis by the pool.

As a builder and student of architecture, and a casual (and often amused) observer of St. John construction, I have one question.

Who in the heck on that island had the kahonas to try to build this?

Congratulations to the architect and the owners of this home.

Nice. Looks like something you’d find at the more upscale islands, and it’s about time!

The owners of this house definitely made it all come together. Cohones, yes, but also a great design sense and interest in the process. Oh, and a lot of patience!
We love having such open-minded clients, and it was great to see them as excited about the unfolding design as we were. We welcome more clients wanting to do something ‘different’- this is the fun stuff!
The contractor was Ned Gerard, ‘Iroquois Builders’. The workers showed up every day to the site excited, waiting to see what sort of structural gymnastics they’d be casting in concrete that day.
Thanks to everyone who loves the house- it’s one of my favorites too!

Here in Las Vegas, we are loaded with mid-century modern architecture…but this is one of the best modern interpretations of midmod styling that I’ve seen. Put it up against anything you can find in Palm Springs, but with just the right amount of St. John style mixed on. absolutely love it.

Oh, and Ted…I’m hoping to study architecture soon. are you hiring? ;)
