Lowest limits in the country

An AOL Autos story points out the obvious: The lowest speed limits in the U-S-of-A are in the Virgin Islands. It also says the conditions do a better job of enforcing speeds than any signs do.

Referring to St. Thomas, it says “With its congestion and rugged terrain, the island is bereft of performance cars; many of the vehicles are older pickups, aging Japanese compacts and SUVs. The treacherous conditions restrict speeds far more effectively than any local law.”

Well, there is that nice, one way stretch between Maho and Centerline road. You can open up there for 5 and 10 second bursts at a time. Sort of.

Before the gates went up at Ditleff Point it was a nice 1/4 mile sprint!

    Cheers, RickG

I HATE the stretch between the smoothie stand and Centerline, the School Bus almost took us out 2 weeks ago! It was flying around blind corners way above the speed limit. My sister gasped and covered her eyes! Usually this happens while being chased by a pickup truck with 20 guys standing in the back.Bad for my Blood pressure.

Oops, I mean between the Cinnamon Bay trail head on Centerline and Columbo’s.

Yep, the one-way bits are where you can live out your NASCAR fantasies for seconds at a time. Hell, I got it up to 35 MPH once! Crazy…

That’s maybe the only highlight of coming home to the states: driving 60+ on the roads right out of the airport…feels like being in a jet, after driving 20mph max., but I always miss seeing the animals everywhere…

After reading Kathleen’s post above now I know why everytime I see a school bus here at home in Ohio, I have a craving for a smoothie!

It all makes sense now…all those visits to Colombo’s…..all the relaxation that was momentarily interrupted by the flying school bus that seemed to come out of nowhere….

I must return to the island soon…

I’m in Columbus and live within walking distance to the stadium! Love chocolate and peanutbutter buckeyes? Check out this Buckeye Cake! I’ve never had one but heard they’re awesome.

Hey fellow Ohioians! I am orignally from Columbus (Upper Arlington) and have lived on St. John for 25 years! My parents built a house in Reef Bay in 1977 appropriately named “Goodbye Columbus”. My ears perk up everytime I meet someone from Ohio - it’s a great place to be from!

Still have to be concerned with donkeys, deer and joggers on the one way though.
As far as Centerline, I’ve got a question. Why is there no continuous guard rail(particularly from Columbo’s to Coral Bay) when we pay “road tax”? I drive that stretch every day and even after all these years I still feel like I’m taking my life in my hands when trucks, etc. decide the middle of the road is a good place to be. Not to mention visitors stopping in a blind curve to take pictures of goats.

Gretchen, we bought our land from your Dad 10 years ago, my husband thought he was a good guy because he liked the Browns and the Bucks!
That’s the way to sell real estate!

    Hello Ohioans!

I saw all the posts from other people in Ohio and figured I had better chime in! I’m a grad student at Ohio University in Athens, and I got my undergrad at Ohio State. I’ll be going to St John for my honeymoon in June/July…are the roads really that bad?

Hi Kevin! What a great start to a marriage. It’s fun to complain and share stories, the roads are twisty, sometimes steep with incredible views. The driver has to pay constant attention,so the passenger gets to enjoy the scenery. The passenger side faces oncoming traffic, which is also navigating the twisty roads! An early congratulations and welcome to a funky paradise!
