Black smoke billows over St. Thomas

A cloud of thick, black smoke coming from St. Thomas, as seen from Cruz Bay at mid-morning, is from a big fire at the St. Thomas landfill. The Source is posting updates. It sounds like a mess. Read the latest details from The Source here.

If you search “Landfill Road St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands in Google Earth, you can see how big the landfill is….this fire could be big…but the facility looks a fair distance from residential areas (but smoke from burning trash isn’t any good for anyone)…. the Ruler tool shows the landfill about 6.6 miles from Cruz Bay…that’s A LOT of smoke!

Fire’s been out since around 1:00pm. It sure had me worried as I walked out to Solomon.

I remember when the STJ landfill caught on fire. Burned for quite some time as I recall. Could smell it clearly where we were staying.

Assume that is the same landfill that is now tall enough to ruin the view from Secret Harbour.
