Meet our newest advertiser: Kalorama

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

Can you build a big villa on St. John without terracotta tiles on the roof and Schnell sconces on the walls? These folks did. Kalorama is not like anything on St. John and yet it feels very islandy. It is sexy, sleek and 50’s-retro chic. And it’s downright cool. This place will end up on the cover of Architectural Digest.

Name that celebrity

Flashback to 1972. This photo of a famous island character, given to us by the blond chick in the photo, also from 1972, below. Bonus points if you know who that longtime St, Johnian is!

Jeep Cam: Boatman Point

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Here’s another great, quiet South shore neighborhood. Off South Shore Road, just before Gifft Hill Road, is Boatman Point off to your right. Look for the mailboxes. We’ll start there and end at a beautiful, private home with a shiny blue roof you can see from surrounding hillsides.

Coral Bay bus stop mural gone

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Now that’s a shame. The Judge Not bus stop in Coral Bay with it’s “eat organic” message has just been painted over. Completely painted over. In white. The mural is lost forever.

But! The “turn tragedy into commerce” boys that we are, look what we stumbled across. The mural is preserved in the form of a mouse pad. You can get one at a store in Coral Bay called Awl Made Here.

St. John Vistas: North Shore views

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

We had a chance to stay on the North Shore recently. A couple of observations. As long time South Shore boys, we thought St. Thomas looked backwards. And, something we never knew…the buoys around Johnson’s Reef light up at night. Blink, blink, blink all night long.

Some daytime views from high up the mountain on the North Shore, below….

Front Yard closing, Chilly Billy’s reopening

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Front Yard owners Carl Stevenson and Juan Ayala are shutting down the longtime Cruz Bay nightspot this summer. They’ve got new fish to fry. And omelets to make.

Carl and Juan are moving just up the street to the old Chilly Billy’s location and, as you can see, they’re already starting to remodel. They plan to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. “We want to be creative and different, but still offer a nice vibe and affordable food,” says Carl. Will the place (still unnamed) be a late night spot like Front Yard too? “We don’t know what we’ll do yet. This is all still new,” he says.

As for the front Yard, they’re planning their last day to be July 4th, squeezing in one last J’ouvert party. “We want to go out in style on our busiest night of the year.”

Below: Carl, wife Shaun and future nightclub owner Jake. (They should call the new place “Jake’s.”)
