It's probable that Eight Belles took a very slight misstep causing the first ankle fracture and the second followed because she could not support all her weight on the remaining good leg. While it's very sad, unfortunately, it's part of thoroughbred racing. They are very powerful animals supported by very fragile legs, ankles and feet.
