Pedal power

We took this picture just before passing these folks on the way up Jacob’s ladder. You don’t see too many bikers on St. John, let alone a couple in their 50’s willing to take on one of the island’s steepest paved hills. These guys did it. When we looked back at the top of the hill, they were halfway up and still peddling. What a FUN coast down the other side must have been.

I envy your lives

Last fall, while driving out on the east end, I made the same comment to my wife about the scarcity of bikers on St. John. Just as we were reciting a litany of reasons for that, we went around a corner and saw a guy workin’ it up and down those hills!
My hat’s off to him, but between the roads, crazy tourist drivers, insane hills, heat, and roving gangs of donkeys, I think I’ll stick to my regimen of doing reps of cocktail glasses when I’m on island…

That gives me an idea. How about bikecam?

When you get to the top of Jacob’s ladder and take a left. Then climb up to Sunset Ridge Villas – What is the name of that road.
I always that the road to the top was Jacob’s Ladder

No thank you! I get winded driving up the ladder, I can not imagine biking or even walking!

Cycling on St. John would require more protection than a sun hat. I’m thinking full face helmet, chest protector, knee and elbow pads and an air bag vest.

OUCH

i would bike if villa owners had bikes to use/rent… i can barely picture bringing a cooler on islsnd (see previous post’s comments, if you haven’t chimed in on that already), so i can’t picture lugging a bike through the airport/ferry dance.

Wow… I have always wondered about bikers when I went to St. John for the 1st time in 2005. I am one myself so I was curious to know what it would be like to bike the island… I like hills
I also wondered if there was a shop on island? Or St. Thomas?
Thanks for sharing this little story.
