Fresh fish, fair prices

Fish Trap’s fish market re-opened recently, and at first blush, the per-pound prices seemed high to us. But they’re actually pretty good. We did extensive research (one call to a Whole Foods in Washington) to comparison shop for you. Tuna is a buck cheaper at Whole Foods. Swordfish is exactly the same. Whole snapper is $3 more at Fish Trap but Monkfish is $1 cheaper. Wahoo and Corvina were greeted with “Huh?” at Whole Foods, but then again tilapia would probably be greeted the same at Fish Trap.
A pound of fish is good for two or three people, maybe four if you’re runway models, right?
Ask the Fish Trap where the fish comes from and they’re perfectly honest. Some of it is flown in as fresh as it can be. Some of it comes from local waters. (We’re pretty sure you can rule out local salmon.) Just ask. They’ll tell you.
And by the way, we’re no experts on this subject. We were both raised in the Midwest. Seafood was Mrs. Paul’s and it came with an envelope of tartar sauce mix…which come to think of it was actually pretty good.

There’s something very ironic about fish being expensive on an island… but then again, the cost of crabs here in Maryland is almost $200 a bushel. I guess I’ll just drink more and eat less when I’m there in 3 weeks!

Some people measure success by how much money you make. I measure success by the ability to choose which foods to purchase based on how healthy it is rather than by how much it costs.

All I need now is a place to buy dry aged NY Strip Steaks and I can leave my softsided cooler at home, Since they are going to charge me $25 bucks to bring my cooler down, buying GOOD food on island is becoming more cost effective.

Speaking of comparison shopping, Pete and I are doing a little of that tonight. Feeling in the mood for Candi’s, went to a Jamaican carry out place for their rib and chicken combo with sides. We’ve just brought it home and Pete is finishing the meat products up on the grill whilst I reheat the sides. The results of the Madison Wisconsin vs St. John rib/chicken/sides dinner soon come.

The prices are high but not disgustingly so. I’d consider that Mahi while I was there if they told me it was local and fresh.
I paid highish prices last fall for seafood in Emerald Isle, NC, but I knew that about the time I was waking up, it was being dragged into the market and cut up. It went from alive to my grill in about 8 hours.
That was worth every penny and then some
