Living lawn ornament

Unlike your tacky neighbor’s, this lawn ornament’s for real. A beautiful (great white heron?) poses at the entrance of the Westin Hotel & Resort.

It’s an Egret. Looks like a great Egret. If it has yellow feet it’s a Snowy Egret.
    Not a Heron.

They must have hired an animal agent. Last week there was a huge iguana hanging out at the tree in the middle of the road in front of the Westin. I would stand there if they would pay me…..

I believe an egret is a type of heron.

Egretta or aigrette? I’m so confused…

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

An egret is any of several herons, most of which are white or buff, and several of which develop fine plumes (usually milky white) during the breeding season. Many egrets are members of the genera Egretta or Ardea which contain other species named as herons rather than egrets. The distinction between a heron and an egret is rather vague, and depends more on appearance than biology. The word “egret” comes from the French word “aigrette”, referring to the long filamentous feathers that seem to cascade down an egret’s back during the breeding season.

For the EGRET satellite mission, see Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope.

PS — I like the sound of the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope. Something from a Bond movie?

In Coral Bay we called them Cattle Egrets.

In my parents’ backyard, we call them F&#(ing birds. They like to swoop in and eat my parents’ fish. It’s really a gray heron or something, but it’s close enough. My father once grabbed one and tried to strangle it. I wish I had been there to see it. He reports that they are greasy birds.

I have nothing else to add at this time

Betsy, the Coral Bay cattle egrets are just that: cattle egrets, a non-native and rather low -class bird that hangs around livestock. This one is a great egret, a very classy bird indeed, slumming at the Westin.

If a man~made pond is constructed properly….. it is nearly impossible for herons to buffet at them …..
