Inspectors leave restaurants hanging

Several Cruz Bay restaurants were hit with closure notices last week after a visit by health inspectors for what we hear were minor infractions, and are still waiting for permission to reopen.
The inspectors usually make the rounds on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but the restaurant owners haven’t been revisited since early last week, leaving popular places like JJ’s Texas Coast, Joe’s Diner and Uncle Joe’s Barbeque unable to reopen.
That’s no good for hungry customers and it’s a really rotten way to treat restaurant owners who haven’t been able to do business for the last week. That kind of treatment could put a guy out of business.

A few of the regular bar flies just couldn’t resist slipping through the door at JJ’s to get their morning beverage.

Maybe the infractions at some of the locations reflect the dismal restroom cleanliness or lack thereof. Last time I visited one of these places the toilet seat was sitting next to the toilet and I wouldn’t have let my worst enemy use the facilities. This is what the people preparing the food are using.
Too many places that serve food on-island get away with this.

Tell me about it. This is killing us. I was forced to go get conch fritters at Woody’s last night and then take them over to another bar.
I’m hoping JJ’s opens today for a few reasons; we’d love to go there and to get JJ back in business. I’m looking forward to meeting her and offering her a hug.

Hummmmmm…… I don’t know what’s going on but reading this story has really made me hungry for some island food. You always want what you can’t have….and now nobody can have it!

I take these type of closings seriously and would like to know exactly what were the infractions, especially at JJ’s, where we had brunch twice while in STJ this past July. Do keep your finicky readers posted, please.

Bummer! Hope there are places open when I get down there in about 48 hours!

Joe’s Diner got the green light today to re-open after installing a new sink (4 sinks are required), removal of an old cooler and some clean-up.
JJ’s and Uncle Joe’s flunked again.

Well, if I was there right now, I’d be headin’ for Rhumblines!

I don’t care what they say! I have seen worse places at home. As soon as we landed at the dock July 17th we were straight to Uncle Joes. We didn’t even wait for our luggage to arrive in the room - Uncle Joes makes you homesick once you leave the island.
Best wishes for a quick reopening to JJ’s and Uncle Joes - the economy isn’t bad enough - now this??????

bnelson,
Don’t visions of caribbean restrooms like that make you laugh. I love the charm of the caribbean. That is why I chose going there over the Four Seasons in Hawaii.

I was recently at Rhumblines and we were flicking cock roaches off our table all night. I informed the waitress (very politely) and then overheard her making fun of me. I know it must be close to impossible to control something like that in an outside setting and I realize cockroaches are all over the islands, but it was really bad. Call me crazy but I thought cock roaches carried bacteria and disease!!! Maybe that is why I was sick the next day. Love the food there, but not going back. I’ll stick with places with bright lighting and hope there clean.

Woody’s was inspected on wednesday and got a 92 score. That’s pretty darn good. Nice job Boys!
