Roundabout reminder

So work is officially underway on the Cruz Bay Roundabout. Here’s a repost of the plan. That intersection is kind of a roundabout anyway. All the spokes, minus the actual circle. (Chicken scratch not to scale!) $7 million and two years. Just like a new villa.

I’ve tackled these pretty easily stateside. I wonder if the left side drive combined with roundabout rules will be more than some yanks can handle…

The one roundabout in Rye NY where I grew up and currently work is pretty unfathomable to about half the users (yielding is foreign to them). 2 towns over in Greenwich Ct. there are quite a few and everyone gets it. In Scotland they’re everywhere, and lefthand driving, a little confusing for this yank but with a little practice not too hard.

All I can think of with circles and left-sided driving is “Big Ben, Parliament”. We are slowly adding circles in PA and yes, people do not know what yield means. Many don’t get that merging on to a highway either but I digress.

I’m quite used to driving in rotaries (as we call them here), but when we traveled in Ireland, going through them on the “other side” did pose the biggest challenge. Kind of having to go against basic instincts.
One of the more interesting driving experiences I ever had was years ago in Ghana in West Africa. As a former British colony, Ghana drove on the left, but decided to switch over to the right to be in line with the surrounding countries. There was an information campaign, then on a given date, everyone started (or was supposed to start) driving on the right.

Hmmm. It is needed as that is classified as a high risk area to rescue workers on te isle ( having been one myself). However it is also a bit confusing compared to the ones in mass where I am now. It will take time but eventually it will be apart of everyday life
