Torrential rains hammer St. John

It has been a very wet few days on St. John. Blame that guy, that low pressure system hanging around that’s likely to become a tropical storm and head to the U.S. east coast.
Some estimates say St. John was soaked with as much as 3 inches of rain in a half an hour Monday. Close to 10 inches since the weekend. That’s a lot of rain.
Our i-Reporter team (Captain John) took some time to run around the island yesterday. Here’s exclusive video of an amazing amount of runoff that’s flooding streets and turning bays brown.

Holy smoke, Batman! There’ll be a bloody week of mosquitos ahead…

I guess cisterns are full
Anyone know how busy (or not) The Parrot Club has been?
Hope everyone kept their lights off after the rain. No one needs rain bugs to come into their bed with them

Rain, rain, go away!
My St. John vacation is just a week from today!

Thanks Capt John! The gut videos were amazing!

Looked like a great Jeep ad in the begining.
September 23rd, 2008 07:21
OMG – that was amazing video. I can only imagine what it is like to drive on some of the roads. WOW.
Good Job Captian John
BTW – what every happened to the boats that washed on shore a couple of weeks ago? Have they been able to get them back to the water? Just curious.

The sailing catamaran is gone, it’s in the boatyard down on St Thomas. The other big sailboat is still there. Word is that they are waiting for a big crane and barge from PR to get it off. Most of the smaller boats have been abandoned.

Probably a goood time to visit those falls up in Guinea (?) Gut.

We’re in for another rainy day. The sky is black & the wind is kicking up – here come da rain …
September 23rd, 2008 08:25
It is certainly green. I noticed in the Tradewinds more rain this yr then last.
I remember in Nov 2003, a few months after I got there we had so much rain in like 2 days……
September 23rd, 2008 08:32
Yuck. Cool video, though, Captain John.
September 23rd, 2008 08:54
Thanks Captain John for the video!
September 23rd, 2008 09:03
May the force be with you guys a week from now…skeeters be coming…
September 23rd, 2008 09:21
On a positive note, the cisterns must be full and the water trucks off the highways. On another postive note, the island is obviously much greener than it was in July when we were there. Sorry for the down days for tourists and boat operators, but it makes the sunny days that much better.

Wow, look at all that runoff in the bays. The water rushing down the gut was beautiful though!
I hope better weather is on the way soon.

WOW! Reminds me of the rains of Nov 2003. Thanks for the video Captain John. It was nice to see our old apt.

Bert, bert, bert. You’re hitting the bottle awfully early today aren’t you?
It would be a nice accessory, especially paired with your scubado rag.

Bert!
Read the istructions Dude….keep it to yourself!

If I’d brought the right cable I’d upload some rainy day video as well! Oh well, Capt. got it right, but today (Tuesday) around lunch time, the clouds parted and the Caribbean sun shone thru. It was a BEAUTIFUL day!
September 23rd, 2008 18:00
What’s a rain bug???
September 23rd, 2008 20:43
Great video – all the bays look like Chocolate Hole. I have been wondering what it looked like during a hard rain. My best friend in Montgomery and I visit your site just about every day. It’s how we keep in touch with things down there 51 weeks out of the year. Keep up the good work.

What great video. Loved, Loved the Gut, instant waterfall. Glad that we aren’t there right now, my husband Kevin drives like a maniac on the switch backs when the road is dry, I wouldn’t want to see them when they are wet. I probably would be in divorce court.
Everything looks really green. Watch out for the mosquitos!

Holy cow, that’s amazing! To see rushing water on what’s basically a dry island. So what is the absolute COOLEST spot to go after a long hard rain? The hieroglyph pool? What’s Guinea Gut? I’d slog through the mud and rain to see a waterfall on St John.
