Hate your WAPA bill? Say so
Here’s a fax campaign that is working its way around the island. If you’re a homeowner and you’re weary of WAPA, print this, sign it and fax it. Will it make a difference? I donno. Print it, sign it and fax it. Let’s see.
Here’s an example of how huge WAPA bills are: Two bedroom Bongo Bongo’s August WAPA bill: $1,516.30. How big is yours?

That’s a lotta clams.

Amorosa Peter Bay August bill was a whopping $4 Grand! Highest ever.

I wonder why solar and wind isn’t used more …………..
September 28th, 2008 08:40
411.38 out here in Coral Bay…Ruth how was yours?
September 28th, 2008 08:49
Was not on island and my bill went from +- 900.00 to 2,300.00. This is what happens with a government monopoly. When there is no competition this is what you get every time.

$378.77 for an approx 900 square foot home
Air conditioning in bedroom (window unit) only at night.

Our’s has gone up, but it’s still under $200. No air conditioning, no clothes drier. No other secret.

Solar may not be a bad supplement at these prices. In short run all we can do is monitor energy usage and adjust life styles. Cold water for full load washings, ac for hotest evenings only, sun lighting only during the day, etc. I was surprised at how all the small life style changes in energy usage added up to big savings. My bills are not up that much at all, but the kwh is way way down.

Is that 4k for Amorosa and 1.5k for Bongo with or without people staying in the villas all month?
September 28th, 2008 11:36
$831.53 at Reef Madness. I think the solar water heater is helping us greatly…
September 28th, 2008 11:43
Bongo Bongo had guests all 4 weeks.
We think it’s waffle iron and coffee grinder.
September 28th, 2008 12:15
and don’t forget the blender running 24/7…
September 28th, 2008 13:15
I guess the highest reported, as discussed at the latest St. John City Council, was $43,000 for a St. Thomas biz last month. They’re going to put everyone out of business.
September 28th, 2008 14:38
Those damn guests should lay off the coffee grinder!
September 28th, 2008 15:49
Ya know, for rental units it may make sense to begin thinking about asking the guests to use common sense..ya know the cute little fold over messages about conservation. Perhaps raise the rates…call it an energy surcharge…the guests can even super size it and make it a green energy surcharge…

LOL @ Jeff and Mary Beth.

I have friends that had to go to charging extra for air in the great room to many people running the AC with the patio doors open. Also it is like 30% more if you have your place listed as a corp. even if it is just an LLC

When I went last year, I went in one of the other bedrooms and found that someone in our group had left her air on and gone off for a day sail. I shut it off for her. So, I’m sure some of the people staying in villas have no common sense or manners.
Here in Nashville, our electric is going up 19 percent next month. The TVA is the WAPA of the South!

As we say in the “Live Free or Die” state—”That’s a Wapa!”.
September 29th, 2008 10:29
I have tried faxing this for 2 days – busy, busy, busy. They must have the fax off the hook.
September 29th, 2008 12:04
Since I plan on only using the solar powered coffee grinder at Reef Madness, it’s still ok for me to bring beans instead of ground, right?
Maybe Moe, Larry, and Curly can be harnessed to run the waffle iron…

$1516.30 for Bongo Bongo in august seems high, but it was completely rented which is close to $18,000 gross for the month based on the high season rates. I would say it’s one thing for people that live modestly on island paying that much with no rental income being a huge burden, but a multimillion dollar rental with a roughly 8.5% of gross utility bill is a whole seperate matter.
September 29th, 2008 15:54
The fax machine is not working at the St. Thomas office. Please let everyone know that they must fax to the St. Croix office which is 778-0302. Thanks.

Hi Rich
This is low season so your figure are 4200.00 to high
September 30th, 2008 14:53
Waterguy – My mistake, I stand corrected, at least $13,600 gross income ($3400/wk) with a 11% utility bill.

Just saw this on the St John Source:
“WAPA Proposal Would Reduce Average Electric Bill 18 Percent”

RichB,
I’m just guessing, but I bet there a few other expenses involved in the short-term rental business besides the WAPA bill. Like the villa management company, cleaning, pool maintenance, insurance, landscaping, repairs, improvements, general maintenance and taxes, for starters.
I could be wrong, though, that’s not the business I’m in.

I’d love to run the numbers for ya, but let’s just say the WAPA bill is one of MANY expenses involved with running a rental villa. It’s not really a big money-making business – breaking somewhat even is the goal.

How much is the price per kilowatt?
