Island Blues reworks the menu
Wally Rankin is back at Island Blues, and he’s revamped the menu. Wally defected to Compass Rose a couple of years ago, but owner Joan Hayes has hired him back as Island Blues’ new general manager.
“My job here is to recruit and keep a good staff,” he tells us. “Greg Seerden, one of my chefs at Compass Rose, is now in charge of the kitchen under my direction, and has helped me create a menu with quality fare at reasonable prices.”
You’ll still get live music just about every day and one of the best waterfront spots in Coral Bay.
The menu includes grilled fish, a hot roast beef sandwich, steamed clams and chicken wraps. And Wally’s crab bisque.
“We’ve got a new motto at Island Blues now,” says Wally. “Every dish goes to our mother.” Check out the revamped Island Blues menu, here.

2 weeks back, my mother called us and began screeching into the phone at my wife. All I picked up from the conversation was “Island Blues”. What? Apparently, my mother has a friend who is friends with the lady who owns it (I assume that’s her pictured above (the one lacking a beard)).
I have nothing else to add other than that it seemed to be closed this summer when we drove past. Does have a fantastic view though. It’s a spot on our list.

Great News!
We have been coming to St. John for years and always loved going to Island Blues. About three years ago it seemed to us that the food took a downturn and we had actually stopped eating there. We used to LOVE their soups. We will have to try the place again on our next trip.

That’s a great spot. I always thought a wooden deck with more tables out back would make sense. Food was good in March, the view was incredible, and we’ll be back. Probably have the Crab Cake Sandwich. And a beer. Cheers!

I happened by yesterday and was bummed. It still has the charm – and the food was good. But not special. I loved the specials that were served previously. Again – food is good… and maybe they will expand the menu soon. I still long for the grouper tacos with mango I had one day long ago…

$7.00 hot dog? Does that mean I have to eat it with a knife and fork?

Will any of our responses be heard? Or, are we just venting to each other? I guess I don’t care either way. No, wait. I do. I’d love to go to Island Blues but with the new menu, I know we won’t. So, I guess I do care.

your responses are heard loud and clear. thank you for taking time to let us know your thoughts. wally and i are very interested to hear what you have to say.

Joan, I am glad that you are listening. Having been in the restaurant business for years (years ago), I know that customer feedback is crucial. You can’t please everyone but, if you don’t get their pulse, it can have disastrous effects on your business.

Oh, man, I used to love their salad with greens, fruit, nuts, crumbled blue cheese, and vinaigrette…I’ll miss that. This vegetarian can’t find much besides the house salad & munchies now…very sad for me. Oh, well, I’ll still go for a beer or two.

The grilled cheese at 6 buckaroos ain’t a bad deal. There is a diner here in GA. that charges 5 and some change and give you a lousy bag of lunch chips and a pickle. Anything remotely close in price on STJ is a bargain in my book.
December 8th, 2008 09:29
$16 for nachos with the meat added, really? $2 for cheese on your chicken or fish sandwich; and since when did anyone pay the same for chicken and mahi? Sorry, the ood’s been good, but to advertise it at reasonable prices? It’s even high for STJ….

We were on the island for Thanksgiving week…island blues is always a favorite of ours. The only disappointment we found was no more “quesadilla of the day”…my husband was a big fan of that. Food was still good, can’t beat the atmosphere and Kareoke was a riot!
December 14th, 2008 12:13
i am disappointed at the prices 12.50 for a cheese burger w/ fries, 10.00 for a salad.
Sorry i am eating at home.
