NY Times says eat cheap at The Bistro

A couple of St. John restaurants are mentioned in a huge, five page New York Times feature today called Affordable Caribbean. The St. John Waterfront Bistro gets a mention for affordable dining, but only if you know when to go, says the paper.
“To save money, eat early; lunch is about three times cheaper than dinner, despite similar dishes like the rigatoni with grilled squash and roasted tomatoes ($11), and fresh mahi-mahi tacos ($13),” says Travel writer David G. Allan. If you haven’t eaten there, here are the Bistro’s menus.
Also mentioned as affordable is the Sun Dog Café at Mongoose Junction. “The menu is impressive for a kitchen the size of a Volkswagen Beetle,” Allan says, calling the 10 inch artichoke pizza ($10) a satisfying meal.

LOVE Sun Dog but please tell them to bring back brunch before May of this year. Thank you
Will plan to do the Bistro on this trip. It was under construction last we saw it.

My husband and I have spent many hours at the Gecko Gazebo on our visits to Saint John the past 8 years. Megan and Tyler keep us entertained and well stocked with endless fabulous beverages : ) The food is excellent and we cannot wait to visit again for Sunday brunch and champagne.

Great food at the Sun Dog Cafe. Missed it our last trip in December though! We never made it back from Coral Bay until day of departure!!

Amen to more Sun Dog brunch! It’s the best; would LOVE it during season!!
My favorite bang-for-the-buck is Rhumblines. It’s a gem, and a few of their dishes are easily as good as what I’ve had at Waterfront Bistro.

The Sun Dog stopped doing brunch about two months ago. Now they do dinner M-F. We miss the brunch on Sundays but we still have Tyler!

They mentioned Woody’s which still has one of the best happy hours and you gotta love them shark bites! The view is the only drawback, but it’s a good place to chuckle at, and laugh with, the cruisers.

We went to brunch yesterday at Rhumblines. It was good but we miss Pauly’s Eggs Benedict and the usual crowd. C’mon Micheal & Barbie, bring it back.

Sun Dog is fantastic – great food and reasonably priced. We unfortunately did not discover it until the end of our last trip to St John, or we would have made many more trips there for lunch or dinner.

The food at Waterfront Bistro was some of the best we have had on island. The view during sunset is spectacular, the glass railings are a nice touch. We ate there several times at night, but now we know to check out lunch on our next trip.
When Stone Terrace closed we were disappointed, but we now have a replacement favorite!

Ok I’ll let my business idea out of the bag. I want to start a gourmet food hot and cold (salad) bar by the pound. To go in styrofoam boxes in a small location to minimize overhead. Restaurant quality. Probably 10 or 11 bucks a pound. Self-serve. Very healthy. Great meals for people on the go with no tipping or waiting for a table. That frees up valuable cash and time for drinks and sunset at the bar at ZoZo’s or dancing in the streets. Feel free to beat me to it. It may be a few years till I get around to it.

We have a short term rental house in Coral Bay. When we make the trek to Cruz Bay, the Sun Dog Cafe is a must for lunch. The food is great and resonably priced. There are daily specials for variety and the bottomless ice tea is very refreshing. My personal favorite is the Willes Turkey sandwich, loaded with meat, cheese and garlic cloves topped with whole grain mustard and served warm with a choice of sides.

I love sun dog. I eat there 3 times a week. Love the pig sandwich, white pizza, veggie burrito, so good!

So many nice comments-THANKS! Sorry about having to discontinue the Brunch–such a small space and so many special ingredients for that one. Check out our new dinner menu served Monday to Friday nights and if you’re on St. John and love music–there is no better scene than the Wednesday Night Jam
Thanks Again,
Michael & Barbie
