Obama pride

We saw this “Obama” license plate in the window of a car recently. Then we saw the same plate on a taxi. And then another on a truck.
We checked, and you can’t get one of these, but there are a dozen or so of them floating around. Mementos, and not valid plates, they were given by the Virgin Islands DNC to delegation members who traveled to Denver for the Democratic Convention in August. Quite the sought-after prize. Or passed on gift.
You can still get a Friends of the VINP “Obama” plate. According to Friends, as of this post, no one has requested it. (But for that matter, also available: “Bush,” “Clinton,” “Reagan,” “Carter,” “Ford,” and “Nixon.”)
We’d be exaggerating to say Obama is everywhere, but there is a lot of support for the new President being shown around the island.

There’s alot of support for our President everywhere. Even here in Virginia – the state that brought Obama victory. He has a huge mess to clean up, and it’ll take all of us to make things better. It’s good to know we have a President who knows how to body surf!

When I lived on island, I never saw this much support for any politician in Washington. The USVI residents don’t get to vote for President,
so personal politics aside, it is nice to see.
BTW-Saying “no comment” is making a very clear comment.
Poeple can support anyone they like, as long as the beach is still there and the rum is flowing, it doesn’t matter to me!

Ahh…the slippery slope of politics.
I could go on all day with a few choice thoughts, but will instead say this.
I’m impressed by the support and excitement shown in the last election by people in the territories, especially when you consider that they “don’t count” in the final tallies.
It’s good to see people excited. I may have differing opinions on why or about what the excitement stems from, but it’s good to see people actually care and not just piss and moan all the time.
My “advice” to the President: You have the audience…go own the room. This is your chance to be great. Please…for the sake of me and my children and my country, don’t blow it. This country needs a leader. Go lead it.
I’m gonna show myself out now before I either start really ranting and touch off a riot.

Let’s hope the USVI starts getting more love from the federal government. We know at least Obama knows it’s *there* from his vacation last year.
I’m particularly interested in whether USVI is on the map from an education standpoint (stimulus, budget, etc).

Please keep your wonderful website, the best on St John anywhere, from coverage of political and Obama issues.

Thanks for the suggestion Tom.
We really didn’t mean to draw camps.
The story is simply that we’ve never seen outward pride or support for a national politician on St. John before.
That speaks for itself.

Please leave politics out of the discussion!

How DOES a Presidential candidate GET to St. John??? Did he come by ferry from St. Thomas like everyone else (seems like a security nightmare)…private yacht…para sail???? Maybe Capt. Brandy can snoop around just like he did while breaking the Michael Jackson case….

That first picture… that is in our store VERACE. We are thrilled to welcome the new president. Even though we cannot vote for the president here, Obama is very clearly supported by may in the USVI. I, and many others THANK you for including this historic moment in your “forum”.

When did expressing support for our President become “politics”? Seems patriotic to me…
