Rum Cart: Coast Guard approved?
The happy rum punch greeters recently employed by the tourism department to greet folks getting off the boat in Cruz Bay now have an official office from which to greet.
But they can’t use it yet.
The Greeter Cart, shown here with Les Anderson, who designed and built it, is ready to roll. It’s parked by the tourism office in Cruz Bay right now, awaiting inspection by Department of Tourism, as well as the Virgin Islands Port Authority and the Coast Guard, which must approve it for use on the dock. Yes, that is true.
The greeters are at the ferry dock most days from 11am to 2pm and 4pm to 8pm. They also set up shop across from Nature’s Nook when cruise ship tenders are coming in to the dock there.

Please let them know they have permission to set up shop on my dock… it just happen to be in Michigan… No Coast Guard inspection required.

This is one of the things that I find incredible at times on StJ. You can drive a cement truck with bald tires at 60 mph through the mountains. You can’t find actual criminals in major cases. But you can shut down a land bound pushed cart for Coast Guard approval? It’s a beautiful, friendly, wonderful place. But spend a few weeks and you’ll find out that priorities are a mess.

Where do I apply for the “happy rum punch greeter” job?

Being an x-Coastie and arriving in 12 days tell Les I will be more than happy to approve his cart. However it may take multiple inspections to insure that is drinking containers do not leak the devil’s water into Cruz Bay.

Colleen…the line forms behind me!
Once they get that nice little cart loaded up for business, I’m sure there will be more government officials making “inspections”, but only between 11-2 and 4-8…
I would love to see the government manual that outlines the official protocol for inspecting a rum cart…

“…awaiting inspection by Department of Tourism, as well as the Virgin Islands Port Authority and the Coast Guard…”
That’ll be about 6 months from now.
It looks much better than the plastic table with the sad little tablecloth they use now. Good job~

I just hope that they will be using real Virgin Island rum, and not that swill from a couple islands to the west.

No doubt that the inspection sheet for the Dept. of Tourism will include the provision “..pending approval by the U.S. Coast Guard..”, while the Coast Guard’s approval will be withheld until “…sign off from the Dept. of Tourism…”.
“No, I waitin fo de Coast Guard tuh go fust”.
“Coast Guard cyant approve til Tourism give de okay.”
