Why? Well, we’ve been given a number of answers, but our favorite explanation is this: “Flies freak out when they see a big reflection of themselves.”
We don’t know why the water bags repel flies, or even if they really do at all, but we do know flies used to be your dining mates at Skinny Legs. And it is now, pretty much, fly-free. Really!
The greeter cart has been declared safe and sound for use on a commercial dock by the Coast Guard and the Virgin Islands Port Authority, and a little more than three weeks after the tourism department first showed it to the public, it is ready for duty.
The cute little cart replaces the makeshift folding table and umbrella the greeters have been using for the last couple of months.
From the time the tourism department first announced Cruz Bay greeters were coming, to the cart getting parked on the dock took about 9 months. Not bad by island standards.
What’s with the Ziplock bags full of water (and in this case plastic goldfish) hanging all around Skinny Legs?
You can take the quiz below, or you can ask your waitress. Once you get the answer, be a good reporter and ask the obvious follow-up question. That’s when the answers gets a little fuzzy.
Dylan and his 4 year old daughter Myah, from Northern Vermont, were hard at work finishing up this sandcastle when we ran across them at Maho Bay the other day.
It is their favorite beach pastime, and one of many castles they have constructed over the winter months in recent years.
Dylan, Myah and mom Sharon are living the dream. Each January, after the holidays have passed, they pack themselves up, move down to St. John, find a rental apartment and settle in for the cold months.
Dylan works construction jobs while the family is on-island, but he and Myah prefer building their own castles. This one took about 3 and a half hours to erect.
The Nellis Family was on the cutting edge in 1983. Dad had a video camera.
While enjoying their Chocolate Hole villa, the family decided to videotape a Jeep ride from their house on their way to Caneel Bay for brunch.
The family still owns the villa, Rainbow Plantation, which is just up the hill past the Westin and a quick left just past Rock Ridge Road at the crest of the hill.
We’ll ride along with the Nellis family, as far as the Cruz Bay overlook today.

This is a very cool place. The view from Skyflower almost makes you dizzy. You are so high up the back side of Bordeaux Mountain (access via Bodo Road on the Coral Bay side) that you can see at least a dozen islands.
A great room is separated by large covered decks from the two bedrooms, the lower with its own studio and kitchen. There is a hot tub, lightening fast WiFi and satellite TV. But you won’t be watching TV.
Pictures don’t do the view justice, so here’s a quick video panorama from Skyflower, below.
Isnt’ that just a crazy, Wall Street-like headline? (TMCR +1.25, 3.05*)
No paperwork has been signed, so if you’re a box holder like us, keep holding your breath for a few more days. But it appears the Mail Center’s white knight is just across the hall.
ADM Wireless, an authorized AT&T wireless reseller with a store on St. Thomas and a St. John location at Surf da’ Web, has emerged as the interested party that will take over the beleaguered Mail Center.
Adding retail, especially wireless services and accessories, might be just the shot of life the business needs. We’re told ADM owner Trevor Adams even has expansion plans for the Mail Center.
But enough of the saga already. Sign some paperwork. We’ve got Crate & Barrel incoming. We’d like to know we’ll be getting it.
We have in our possession VHS video of what you could describe as the original St. John Jeep Cam…from 1983. It’s courtesy of the owner of a Chocolate Hole villa, and includes the villa, family and a complete Jeep ride (a CJ8) from Chocolate Hole to Caneel.
It also includes a ferry ride to St. Thomas and the St. Thomas airport. All from almost 26 years ago.
Me, I’d just throw it up on the site and let you watch.
Russ on the other hand is adding romantic piano music and mixing new video with old shots and basically going over the top and planning a three-part series.
Me, you’d leave a 20 on the dresser and say thanks.
