Chocolate Hole was not kind to at least two boat owners last week. This sailboat broke free and eventually smashed into the rocks.
The story going around says this is the second time this boat has broken loose. The last time… it was saved by the Internet.
The owners, who live in Holland, happened to spot it adrift on the Chocolate Hole Webcam, and were able to make a quick call to caretakers in time to save it.
Or, so the story goes.
A second boat in Chocolate Hole capsized after heavy rains last week.
Judging by this spy photo, the new Dolphin Gourmet Market on the South Shore road near the Westin is very close to opening.
Workers were busy unloading a Tropical container this weekend, stocking dry goods and non-perishables, and from the looks of the equipment inside, the market will be carrying lots of frozen items and selling lots of prepared foods.
And there is plenty of parking.
If it’s a good store, it’s great for all those South Shore residents and all the people staying at South Shore rental villas, and I’d bet folks living on their boats in Great Cruz Bay are looking forward to it too.
This year’s race drew six contenders. The race in pictures:
Boo, the judge, giving instructions; Local favorite, the Biggest Boozer; Boozer Captain Megan; Captain Gunther’s webbed hands (like a duct); Fins Up and Bottom Finder in the semi-final round; Bottom Finder finding the bottom; and the winner- Jessifer.
The Dip signs aren’t the only ones with slight modifications. Hill signs get them too. There’s one near Coral Bay that says CHill. And there is this one. Do you know where Over the Hill is?
The mosquitoes are the talk of the island. This week’s attack has been one of the worst in a long time. They travel in hungry packs and they are relentless.
Rain makes mosquitoes. But rain also makes rainbows. A much more pleasant consequence.
The former Gym in Paradise, which closed in March when its owner of one year succumbed to financial troubles, will re-open May 25 as Hardware Abs.
The new name tells you who the new owners are. Tom and Terry Bertolino and Kate and Jim Swan, who have owned and operated the nearby St. John Hardware since 1995, have re-taken the gym, after selling it in 2008.
“It’s getting a top to bottom cleaning, and we’re refurbishing the equipment that needs it,” says Terry. “The treadmills all have new motors and new treads and run like new.”
A basic membership is $65 a month. For previous members who pay for June, July is free. There are discounts for 3,6 and 12 month memberships and for nonmembers there are also daily and weekly rates.
Starfish has brought back its discount card. Unlike the one we remember from years ago, this one gets you discounts on things you might actually want to buy. We just got discounts on ketchup, mustard, Evian water and fresh baked Kaiser rolls. We saved $1.60 on a $30 visit.
Look for the stickers (below) to know what qualifies.
Marketplace. The ladies room at Marketplace. You can get all your pent up flushing relieved with management’s blessing there. While reader “Beachcomber” was technically first (“At Marketplace,”) but “Ruth” wins for being more accurate (“First floor ladies room at Marketplace last stall on the right.”)
Seven of the Virgin Islands favorite bars are currently ranked in the top 20 of Lonely Planet’s Best Bars in the World contest. The WORLD. If you’d like to vote, you’re running out of time.
As of this writing (and the rankings seem to change by the minute) these bars are ranked among the world’s best: Woody’s, Quiet Mon, Beach Bar, Skinny Legs, Soggy Dollar, Willie-T and Foxy’s.
So…this means more than a third of the best bars in the world are, uh, here.
Which is good, because more than a third of the best drinkers in the world are, uh…here!
The island of fun and sun, never flushing for number one, isn’t universally followed on St. John. Do you know where this restroom that encourages you to flush is?
A 2.5 ounce bag of Cruz Bay Grill Rub to the first person to get it right.
