Governor rescinds property taxes

An appeals court says the 2006 property tax bills are indeed invalid, and the governor is backing down from trying to collect them.
“As a result of the decision, the Tax Assessor’s office will be rescinding the 2006 property tax bills,” Governor deJongh’s office said in a statement. “In addition, the executive order which was issued setting due dates for those property tax bills will be vacated.”
In other words, that 2006 property tax bill can continue to sit somewhere in a dusty corner of your desk. Right where it’s been since last summer.
The Virgin Islands government is out about $28 million by not collecting these taxes. The last year for which property taxes have been paid was 2005.

What?
What story did I mess? How on Earth have taxes not been collected in nearly 4 years? Who did what wrong?
On a positive note, some printer gets an unexpected job (Gotta stick up for my peeps in the bidness).

does this mean we are all due some form of rebate on rentals that had the tax “built in” to the rental cost ?

I’m sure since all the home owners in the VI installed those little air conditioner-regulator knobs, the islands are saving so much money that they don’t need all that extra tax money!
$28 mil. x 4 years = $112 million.
That’s a chunk!
Any popular island website could shoot a lot of video of SUNDAY AFTERNOON BOAT RACES ON CRUZ BAY for that amount of cash!

Funny you mention 2006 taxes! I just got our bill a few days ago – do I pay them or wait another 3 years?

O.K. This is good to know. We just receive our 2006 tax bill from the Westin, saying they are due before July 31, 2009. So now I have more money to spend on vacation??? I guess I’m calling the Westin to find out.
Thanks Guys!
