Using Facebook for St. John marketingThursday, July 30th, 2009Viva! Vacations is the latest St. John business to fire up a Facebook page to capitalize on social networking, and they think it’s a good idea for several reasons. “We set up the Facebook page to quickly spread timely information, to gather insights from island visitors, to discuss ideas for change and to provide a place where our loyal client base can share their vacation photos,” Viva! Sales manager Sherrolyn Stapleton tells us. And it is already working for them. “Within the first day, fan feedback gave us insights to needed changes that matter to our clientele and we were able to incorporate them fast.” More villa management companies should do this. Facebook is free advertising. We’ve seen several other St. John businesses that have started Facebook pages in recent months too. Do you know of some we’d like to follow? List them in comments below. VInow adds videosWednesday, July 29th, 2009USVI travel forum and information site VInow.com is getting into the TV business. Sophia Aubin and Ansen Sligar, who have owned VInow since 1999, have launched Colors of Paradise TV; a page on their site that they say will include regularly updated videos from all four Virgin Islands. “We want to show all of the different aspects of the islands,” says Ansen. “We plan to interview local people, go to local events and show local beaches and beauty.” The show’s host is Africah Harrigan, a familiar face on St. Thomas. Both Sophia and Ansen also defer to Africah for the technical side of their new TV venture. Ansen shoots the video, but Africah does all the producing, writing and editing. They promise two videos a month. The first installments take you on a St. John hike and to the recent Kingfish tourney on St. Thomas. See for yourself, here. Jason Video: Trunk Bay solves crime problemTuesday, July 28th, 2009Here’s another Jason Video, this one showing the National Park Service’s latest solution to the Trunk Bay food stand’s oldest problem; theft by birds. Some webbing made of fish line is now stretched over the food court. And employee Dematoya tells Jason it has drastically cut down on bird related food robberies. See for yourself, below! Our newest advertiser: Big PlanetMonday, July 27th, 2009Big Planet will soon open a new store at Mongoose Junction, this one all about sunglasses. The main store is also getting ready for its big Summer Sale; 50 percent to 60 percent off some merchandise. Big Planet is one of Mongoose Junction’s first retailers. Owner Pretlow Majette opened the original store when he was fresh out of college 19 years ago. Meet Pretlow, learn a little about Big Planet, and take a tour of the store, below! 9th Annual Bar Wars is next weekendSunday, July 26th, 2009![]() Time again for Bar Wars, an obstacle course contest designed to test the bartending and food service skills of the teams who enter. Teams can be four to six people. It costs $25 per team to enter. All the proceeds go to the Animal Care Center. Just watching the spectacle is cheap. The Beach Bar will sell $2 Heinekens. (You can also keep up with the Beach Bar’s music schedule and other events at its Facebook page.) Roundabout: Halfway done?Saturday, July 25th, 2009![]() The Lumberyard road is two way again. And if this project is on schedule, it should be half done. Work started on the roundabout in August of 2008. It is scheduled to take just under two years to complete. So, that should mean we’re halfway done. Does it look half done? The High Tide license plateFriday, July 24th, 2009That plate’s not on a truck. It’s on a cooler behind the bar at High Tide. The owner is from Virginia, but the plate was actually a gift. “It was given to me about six years ago when I first took over the business by friends of our family, Ken and Pat Lawrence, who have been coming to St. John for about 20 years,” High Tide owner Jason Bergner tells us. And Ken has fond memories of the plate he gave to Jason all those years ago. “I put that plate on my 1991 Trans Am. We wanted to be reminded of our favorite place every time we looked at the car,” says Ken. “ Lots of people agreed with us, as we were always getting beeps and friendly waves from people who recognized the message on the plate.” Jason and his wife Yahira (below) spend most of their time on St. John and Puerto Rico, where she is from, these days, but he still manages to get back to see family and spend time in the Commonwealth he loves. “I feel very much at home here, but I always miss the truly Virginia experiences I grew up with, like getting bushels of Chesapeake blue crabs off the boat in the summer and the convertible drives down the Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall when the leaves are beginning to change,” he says. “Having the plate behind the bar has started many conversations and given me the opportunity to have an extra connection with some of our guests and to meet fellow Virginians in their travels.” ![]() Winning calendar name: St. John CitizensThursday, July 23rd, 2009![]() Elaine Estern has chosen a name from all of the suggestions for her 2010 St. John calendar, and it will be called St. John Citizens. The winning suggestion comes from both Jim and Annette Harper and Sandy Dean, who will get their own autographed version of the calendar. “There were many great entries that were sent in!” says Elaine. “It was tough to choose but I decided on St. John Citizens because I felt it showed respect for all the creatures that are part of our lives here on the island.” The runner up was “Surf and Turf.” If that was yours, your prize is knowing you were number two. The calendar is now at the printer and won’t be available from Elaine’s Coconut Coast Studios for a few more months yet, but here is a sneak peak of a couple of the new paintings it will include. Above: “Guess Who Came to Dinner” Below: “Coral Bay Corner” ![]() Waterslide at HawksnestWednesday, July 22nd, 2009![]() This is Jason Hubert, who moved from Baltimore to St. John a few weeks ago, putting his climb up the corporate ladder on hold while he tries out the island life. Jason loves to shoot video and he wants to share some of it with us. Like this one. Here’s a look at a water slide beach party at Hawksnest that Jason stumbled across. “Drew and Wes from ZoZo’s and some of their friends set up the slide for all to enjoy,” says Jason. Take a look. It’s fun. And, say “welcome” to Jason and his occasional videos. Paper, yes. Soft seat, no.Tuesday, July 21st, 2009![]() As many predicted, the Beach Bar’s padded toilet seat did not survive. It was a pretty odd place for a cushy seat anyway. But you’ll never run out of paper at the Beach Bar bathroom. There are backups for the backups. Raked and ready for a new dayMonday, July 20th, 2009![]() Did you know the Beach Bar beachfront in Cruz Bay gets cleaned up and raked every morning? If you did know this, you are an early riser because Jimmy is out there raking up debris, both man and nature-made, every morning at the crack of 7 a.m. The Westin has mini-tractors and power rakes for its beach. Cruz Bay has Jimmy. He’s every bit as good as the machines. If you see him, tell him so. |
