Around the Island Swim Update
Tory and Sara are officially half way in their swim around the island, making it to Francis Bay Thursday. They have seen some interesting things along the way, including steel plates on reefs and plenty of sea life. And they’ve had some challenges too.
Tory also wants us to make sure to give props to Sam and Laura from VIBE Charters on St. Thomas who gave up a charter to escort them from Chocolate Hole to Caneel Bay and will help out next weekend on their swim from Francis to Leinster as well.
“After the swim, they drove us back to Cruz Bay and had lunch with us,” Tory says. “They are really generous and fun people.”
Tory and Sara are taking the weekend off for Festival.

I wonder if those steel plates are left over from Tektite?

I would like to see them attempt to do it all in one shot. Hey, people swim the English Channel in one shot, so why not STJ island?

I had a friend who swam from Trunk Bay to Tortola but he said he almost got run over by boats who weren’t paying attention.

I had to google Tektite to find out what fdr was referring to…if anyone else is curious, here’s a link to a 2002 St. John Times newspaper article including letters from team members and even a diagram of the project in 1970: http://www.stjohnbeachguide.com/Tektite_Article.htm

They are definitely the anchoring plates from The Tektite project.

I’m not totally convinced the stainless plates are from Tektite. We saw them in three different spots. The first closest to the Tektite spot. The second, of the point in between both Lameshur Bays. The third spot was on our second leg leaving Europa Bay. Also they don’t look almost 40 years old? Someone from the park service must know.
